Chapter 621
After a while, Lucian asked in a deep voice, โIโm not married, and neither are you. How am I putting you in a tough spot, Ms. Jarvis?โ
Roxanne struggled to contain her emotions. Furrowing her brows, she replied, โIf I remember correctly, it was you, Mr. Farwell, who often reminded me to keep the children in mind.โ
Lucian remained unfazed. โI was merely reminding you to avoid those unsuitable men.โ
Roxanne found his behavior perplexing. โWho do you think you are to me, Mr. Farwell? What gives you the right to interfere in my private life?โ
Lucianโs face crumpled. Then, bluntly, he stated, โIโm telling you this as someone whoโs courting you. Is that sufficient?โ
Roxanne was startled. โWhat did you say?โ
Lucian knitted his brows. Having already revealed so much, he continued, โYou heard me correctly, Ms. Jarvis. I like you, and I want to pursue you.โ
Roxanne remained confused, even after his repetition. After a minuteโs silence, she shook her head, amused. She had heard him clearly, but found his words ironic.
โMr. Farwell, donโt you remember what happened six years ago? Donโt you think this is a bit too late?โ
Lucianโs gaze darkened as he recalled their time at the resort. Remembering Roxanneโs appearance when she was intoxicated, his heart sank. โI remember, and I regret it.โ
Roxanne stared at him, touched by his seriousness. Quickly regaining her composure, she asked coldly, โWhat about Ms. Pearson? Is the marriage contract between you both a lie, Mr. Farwell?โ
Aubree remained a barrier, regardless of the past or present.
Lucianโs expression grew solemn at the mention of Aubree. โI donโt care if you believe me, but I never wanted to marry her. There are still some private matters I need to settle with her. Give me some time, and I promise a satisfactory explanation.โ
Roxanneโs mind went blank. Six years ago, Lucian had been so eager to be with her; now, she seemed to be the problem.
Roxanne didnโt know if he was being truthful, but either way, recalling her experiences six years ago, she felt foolish. The events of that time flashed through her mind. The irony of the situation deepened.
After a long pause, she asked calmly, โAre you doing this because Essie doesnโt like Ms. Pearson?โ
Lucian frowned, sensing her confusion.
โI know you love Essie deeply, Mr. Farwell,โ Roxanne continued, โbut I didnโt expect such a sacrifice, just so Essie could have a mother she likes. Iโm surprised youโd offer someone your wifeโs status.โ She raised her head and looked at him calmly. โYou donโt have to mince words, Mr. Farwell. You already made yourself clear on the phone. You chose me only because Essie likes me.โ
Though it seemed like an attempt to dissuade Lucian, Roxanne was actually trying to convince herself to stay away from him.
Lucianโs gaze grew even more somber as he stared at her.
