Chapter 631
Roxanne stood outside the kindergarten for a while, recovering from her reverie. Putting away her tickets, she got into her car and drove back to the research institute.
Just as she arrived at the office, Jack called. "The date's been decided; it's tonight. Is that alright with you?"
Roxanne, still somewhat disoriented, was slightly startled. It took her a moment to recall Jack's visit from yesterday. They were meeting the collaborating doctors tonight. On the other end, Jack urged, "Ms. Jarvis? Is something wrong? Is the timing inconvenient?"
Roxanne snapped out of her thoughts. "It's nothing. I'm free. I'll be on time tonight."
Though Jack found her reaction unusual, he didn't press further over the phone. He simply left her with some reminders before ending the call.
The morning's incident left Roxanne preoccupied for the rest of the day. That afternoon, she left work half an hour early to prepare for the evening banquet. Out of respect for the doctors, she wanted to freshen up at home.
Just as she was about to leave, Larry called.
"Where are you?" Larry asked immediately.
Roxanne was surprised. "At home. What is it?"
Larry chuckled. "I'll pick you up."
Roxanne understood. Larry was likely one of the collaborating doctors. Smiling, she declined. "No need. I'll go myself. See you at the banquet."
"Are you sure? I heard from Mr. Damaris that you hurt your foot." Jack had mentioned it casually two days ago while discussing the collaboration. Larry had wanted to visit but hadn't had the time. Learning she'd be at the banquet, he'd offered to pick her up, concerned about her injury.
"I've recovered. Don't worry, Larry," she reassured him.
Larry didn't press further and agreed.
By the time they hung up, it was almost time. Roxanne went downstairs and drove to the banquet venue. Larry and Jack were chatting at the entrance.
Upon seeing Roxanne, they stopped and greeted her warmly.
"Hello, Larry. Hello, Mr. Damaris," Roxanne greeted, smiling. Jack nodded in acknowledgment. Larry engaged her in brief conversation, likely because they hadn't seen each other in a while. "I heard you hurt your foot. I wanted to visit, but I couldn't find the time."
Roxanne smiled. "It's a minor injury. Besides, I'm fine now. I wouldn't want my injury to impede your work."
They smiled at each other. Jack, noticing arriving guests, called out, "Let's go inside. Everyone's nearly here."
They agreed and followed Jack into the banquet hall. As soon as they entered, all eyes turned to them. This was due to Jack's status as host and the significant age difference between Roxanne and Larry compared to the other attendees. Despite their impressive appearance, experience and qualifications held more weight in the traditional medical community; their presence was striking and unusual.
