Chapter 638
For years, Jack had been surrounded by no other woman but Jessica. Although two years his senior, Jessica considered herself his future wifeโuntil she met Roxanne.
The more Jessica witnessed others complimenting Roxanne, the more restless she became. After surveying her surroundings and seeing Jack toasting the doctors, she poured herself a glass of wine and approached him. โJack, arenโt you finished yet?โ she said, her tone implying possession. The women nearby cooed.
Jack, mid-conversation about professional matters, was abruptly interrupted. His smile vanished. โI still need a little longer. If youโre bored, you can return with the others. Iโll join you when Iโm finished.โ
It was a subtle dismissal. Displeasure simmered within Jessica, but she smiled and moved closer, raising her glass. โYouโre all Jackโs seniors,โ she announced to the doctors. โAs someone close to him, I must offer a toast.โ She drained her wine, acting as if she were the mistress of Jack's household. The doctors exchanged bewildered glances but politely sipped their drinks.
Jessica beamed, pleased to remain by Jackโs side. The other women, witnessing their apparent intimacy, cheered.
However, Jack, unable to continue after the interruption, apologized to the doctors. โLetโs discuss the details another day. Itโs late; letโs return after this meal.โ They agreed. Jack glanced at Jessica, frowned, suppressed his displeasure, and guided her back to their seats.
Upon sitting, he noticed a shift in their arrangement and his frown deepened. โWhy is Dr. Jarvis on the other side?โ he asked, despite knowing the answer. Roxanne stiffened, glancing subconsciously at Jessica.
Before Roxanne could respond, Jessica interjected, โMr. Morrison wanted to speak with Dr. Jarvis, so she moved.โ With feigned generosity, she added, โDr. Jarvis, I believe Jack wishes to speak with you. Come sit here; Iโll sit to the side.โ Yet, she remained seated. Roxanne smiled. โIโm fine here; I can chat better with my seniors.โ
Jackโs brows furrowed. โIndeed, I need to speak with Dr. Jarvis. Jessica, please move.โ He had tolerated her interruptions twice; he wouldn't allow it again.
Both Roxanne and Jessica were stunned. Jessica had never imagined Jack would actually rebuff her. Roxanne, meanwhile, sensed Jack using her as a pretext to dismiss Jessica.
Tension filled the room. Jack turned to Jessica, who remained seated, her expression blank. The moment their eyes met, Jessica gritted her teeth, stood, and offered her seat to Roxanne, who had no choice but to take it.
