“Mr. Damaris wasn’t the only one who wanted her to join them. Roxanne had Old Mr. Damaris's approval as well,” Larry observed, having followed their interaction, noticing Roxanne's hesitation.

Jessica frowned, turning to look at him. She'd noticed him earlier; he was impressive, though she held no interest. His unexpected intervention on Roxanne's behalf, however, surprised her.

“You’re…” Jessica began, frowning.

Larry introduced himself politely. “I’m Larry Morrison. I’m just an ordinary doctor; you needn’t remember me.”

Shock flickered across Jessica’s eyes. Larry was a Morrison; everyone in this circle knew of his renown. He'd eschewed his family's wealth, forging a successful medical career. His presence at Horington banquets was rare. This was Jessica's first encounter. He lived up to his reputation: calm, collected, and unaggressive—a likely result of years in medicine.

Regaining her composure, Jessica smiled. “Mr. Morrison. I've heard of you for some time.”

Larry nodded. “If there’s nothing else, Ms. Hightower, I’d like to speak with Dr. Jarvis.”

Before Jessica could reply, Larry turned to Roxanne. “Are you free, Dr. Jarvis? I have some medical matters to discuss.”

Even Roxanne froze momentarily. Though she understood his intent to extricate her from her predicament, she'd never heard him speak so formally. Quickly recovering, she smiled. “Okay.” She offered Jessica an apologetic glance. “Excuse me, Ms. Hightower.”

Jessica managed a small smile as Roxanne joined Larry. Roxanne sighed, offering Larry a grateful smile. “Thank you, Larry.”

Larry sighed. “Be careful. Ms. Hightower seems to have some…misunderstandings.”

Roxanne nodded. She wasn't sure what had caused Jessica's misinterpretations, but a quick explanation was unlikely. She'd speak with Jack later; he could clarify things with Jessica.

The other medical professionals, seeing them together, gathered to discuss medical practices. Both Larry and Roxanne were established figures, returned from overseas. Though their discussion was understated, it piqued everyone's interest, eliciting lively contributions from other doctors. The exchange fostered camaraderie. The doctors increasingly admired Roxanne, reinforcing Daniel's earlier prediction of a promising future for Chanaea's medical field.

Jessica's wariness of Roxanne intensified as she listened to the praise.
