Chapter 640
Sensing Jessica's animosity, Jessica pursed her lips and muttered, "I think you've misunderstood. Iโ"
"I only believe what I see, so remember what I said."
Before Roxanne could respond, Jessica left. Exasperation washed over Roxanne as she returned to her seat.
"Sorry," Jack began apologetically, "Did I cause any trouble?"
"I hope you won't use me as a shield again. There are already misunderstandings between Ms. Hightower and me."
"I think she and I have some misunderstandings, too," Jack replied. Otherwise, she wouldn't have acted like his girlfriend. If not for their families, he would have confronted her long ago.
"Still, don't worry. I'll clarify things with her when I get back. I won't let her trouble you anymore," Jack added thoughtfully.
Roxanne nodded, unfazed. She pitied Jack for encountering Jessica, but then thought of Aubree. She had Jack to deal with Jessica, but Aubree remained a threat. Perhaps, she realized, she was the more pitiful one.
A bitter look crossed Roxanne's face unnoticed.
"What's wrong? Is something else the matter?" Jack asked, concerned.
Roxanne quickly smiled, brushing aside her emotions. "It's nothing. I just find today a little funny."
Jack apologized again. Without Jessica and her companions, the atmosphere was much more relaxed.
After a peaceful meal, everyone went home. Roxanne and the others had been forced to drink heavily by their seniors and couldn't drive. While Larry and Jack called their drivers, Roxanne planned to take a cab.
The three left the hotel together.
"Roxanne, let me take you home. I don't think you'll get a cab at this hour," Larry offered.
Roxanne smiled. "It's fine. I can manage. It's late, and it's inconvenient for you. Your parents will worry if you're late."
Larry sighed. "I'm not a kid anymore. You, however, will have Archie and Benny worrying about you."
Roxanne's eyes softened at the thought of her children. The warm hotel lights cast a gentle glow on her.
Jack, turning to speak, saw this sight and felt a pang in his heart, momentarily speechless.
"I'll let them know later. It's late, best not to trouble you, Larry," Roxanne chuckled, declining his offer.
Larry's gaze darkened. Knowing she wouldn't be persuaded, he conceded. "I'll wait here with you then. It's late, and I'm worried about leaving you alone."
Roxanne smiled in agreement.
