Chapter 653

Pin-drop silence again filled the car. Roxanneโ€™s phone illuminated; a message from Larry asking if sheโ€™d arrived home. Even though he wasnโ€™t present, a smile touched her lips at his concern. She replied, โ€œIโ€™m still on the way back.โ€ He quickly responded, โ€œLet me know when youโ€™re home.โ€ Roxanne beamed her agreement.

Lucian noticed the phoneโ€™s glow and her faint smile. Following her gaze, he saw Larryโ€™s name. He was texting Larry. Lucianโ€™s recently improved mood plummeted. What am I lacking? he wondered. Roxanne grinned so happily at Larryโ€™s message, yet around him, she was always wary. The carโ€™s atmosphere grew colder.

As Roxanne put away her phone, she sensed the tension. Just as she considered what might have offended Lucian, he spoke. โ€œIt seems you maintain a close relationship with Mr. Morrison, Ms. Jarvis.โ€

Stunned, Roxanne realized heโ€™d seen her texting. Her expression fell. โ€œMr. Farwell, isnโ€™t it inappropriate to peek at my phone?โ€

Lucian frowned. โ€œThe car is dark; itโ€™s difficult not to see what youโ€™re doing.โ€

Roxanne was taken aback. Her lit screen was noticeable, but that didnโ€™t justify his intrusion. Indignant, but unwilling to argue, she said, โ€œLarry is simply concerned about my safety. Please donโ€™t misunderstand us, Mr. Farwell.โ€

Lucian sensed her cautious tone and his brow furrowed. He didnโ€™t press further, but her earlier smile fueled his discontent.

Moments later, suppressing his anger, he said in a low voice, โ€œMs. Jarvis, please donโ€™t forget Iโ€™m pursuing you.โ€

Roxanne was caught off guard. After a moment, she calmly replied, โ€œThatโ€™s your problem. Iโ€™ve never taken it seriously. Even if you are pursuing me, itโ€™s your issue. I have no obligation to cooperate.โ€ The tension escalated. Sensing Lucianโ€™s rising temper, Roxanne met his gaze.

โ€œThen take it seriously from now on,โ€ he said, an unreadable glint in his eyes. โ€œI donโ€™t need your cooperation, but you must keep a distance from other men.โ€

His demand amused her. โ€œAs youโ€™ve said, youโ€™re my suitor. What right do you have to restrict me? I donโ€™t see a problem with accepting courtships from several men simultaneously.โ€

Lucianโ€™s temper flared at her hypothetical wish, but he controlled himself.
