Chapter 654: Take My Words Seriously
Roxanne quickly realized the inappropriateness of her words. She'd assumed Lucian would coldly retort, but silence stretched between them, thickening the car's atmosphere. Just as she was about to speak, Lucian's slightly resigned voice broke the quiet.
"If that's the case," he said, "please treat me the same way you treat your other suitors, without prejudice." He'd contemplated long and hard, finally conceding. Roxanne's heart clenched; she almost doubted her ears. How could the proud and arrogant Lucian say such a thing? "If Mr. Morrison is the other suitor you mention, Ms. Jarvis, treat me as you treat him. After all, we've known each other almost as long." His brow furrowed, inexpressible emotions churning within him. "I've made mistakes in the past, but I hope you'll give me a chance to make amends, Ms. Jarvis. At the very least, have faith in my words." He felt helpless, realizing Roxanne had dismissed his previous efforts. This time, however, she knew she wasn't hallucinating. She couldn't believe Lucian was yielding, speaking in such a submissive tone. Since their reunion, he'd been assertive, doing as he pleased, never allowing Roxanne to express her will, forcing compliance. She'd refused him because of it. Now, his accommodating manner lowered her guard; she fell silent, speechless.
She had to take him seriously, but Aubree's presence remained a significant obstacle, rendering his words unconvincing. Despite her silence, her indifferent demeanor wavered. Lucian's gaze bore into her. Without expecting an immediate answer, he pressed further, "So, what must I do for a fair chance?" His barrage of questions brought on a headache. "Lucian, stop pressuring me. Let me think," Roxanne pleaded, needing time to process their relationship and his mindset. He knitted his brows, then fell silent, seemingly to emphasize his words. Conflict swirled within her.
They remained silent until the car stopped at Roxanne's doorstep. "I'll take my leave," Lucian stated. Roxanne hurried out, as if fleeing a crime scene. As she reached for the door, a large hand stopped her. Her heart leaped; she froze, unsure of his intentions. His expression was obscured by shadow as he said earnestly, "I will do as you say; I hope you'll take my words seriously, too."
Roxanne gripped the car door, silent for a moment before nodding. Lucian withdrew his hand. His voice was less grim as he said, "Rest early." Roxanne nodded slightly, closed the door, and entered the mansion.
