Chapter 672: A Troubled Look

โ€œThank you,โ€ Roxanne said. Lucian finally released her shoulders. She immediately stepped away, hugging herself.

His eyes darkened at her haste. An awkward silence fell between them. Roxanne, unprepared for this alone time, felt a surge of panic. She distracted herself by watching the children in the distance.

โ€œDid you feel forced to attend the concert today?โ€ Lucianโ€™s voice cut through the air.

Roxanne, startled, turned to him. His expression was unreadable, a slight frown etched on his face, as if heโ€™d carefully considered his words. She felt a pang of apology.

Do I look like it? she thought, reflecting on her guarded behavior throughout the day. Her expression softened. โ€œNo,โ€ she said with a smile. โ€œSeeing the children happy makes me happy, too.โ€

Lucianโ€™s lips pursed, his gaze intense. โ€œThereโ€™s no need to force yourself, Ms. Jarvis. Tell me if youโ€™re tired. I promised I wouldnโ€™t pressure you.โ€

Roxanneโ€™s heart ached. I canโ€™t believe weโ€™re still discussing this, even after I tried all day to avoid it. He had promised not to force her that night, hoping sheโ€™d see him as a friend. Sheโ€™d clearly failed; in fact, sheโ€™d become even more wary. Itโ€™s because I havenโ€™t made up my mind yetโ€ฆ

A troubled look slowly replaced her smile.

Lucian looked away, his voice low. โ€œSince I made a promise, Iโ€™ll keep my word and give you time to think.โ€ He fell silent.

Roxanne frowned, Madilynโ€™s words from yesterday echoing in her mind: Lucian, Archie and Bennyโ€™s father, the man sheโ€™d cared for deeply six years ago, was the one pursuing her. It wasnโ€™t hatred that kept her distant; it was worry for her children.

She still wasnโ€™t sure how she felt about Lucian. If he can explain Aubreeโ€™s situationโ€ฆ then perhapsโ€ฆ Realizing her thoughts were spiraling, she pinched her palm, forcing herself back to reality. I shouldnโ€™t be thinking about this.

After a long silence, Lucian, noticing her silence, pursed his lips in self-deprecation. โ€œItโ€™s getting late. The children need to be at school tomorrow. Letโ€™s head back.โ€

His voice made Roxanne tense, but relief washed over her at his words. She nodded.

They walked towards the fountain, one behind the other.

โ€œBe careful,โ€ he murmured.

Lost in thought, Roxanne absentmindedly approached a water pump. A strong hand grasped her arm, pulling her away just in time.
