Chapter 682
That same night, Sonya was preparing for bed when Gina called. Immediately after answering, she heard Gina sniffling and Samuel shouting in the background.
โGina, whatโs wrong? Did you argue with Samuel?โ Sonya asked, concerned.
Gina glanced at her father and daughter, who were arguing nearby. Taking a deep breath, she choked out, โSamuelโs angry at Aubree. I think you should come over. Aubree wonโt listen to any of us, but maybe you can reach her.โ
Sonya frowned, listening intently. She could hear Aubreeโs sobs. Because of Aubreeโs previous car accident, Sonya was particularly sensitive to her distress. Hearing her cry made her heart ache. โCalm down and tell me what happened. Whatโs upsetting them?โ
โItโs all because ofโฆโ Gina hesitated, sighing loudly before continuing, โYou should just come over.โ
Anxious, Sonya pressed, โWhy are you keeping things from me? Aubree will be my daughter-in-law eventually. You can tell me everything.โ
After a pause, Gina said bitterly, โItโs because of her engagement to Lucian. Samuel thinks Aubree should cancel it and let Lucian go, since he doesnโt seem to like her. But Aubree refuses. She says sheโll marry no one else. Thatโs why theyโre arguing.โ
Ginaโs account filled Sonya with a sense of apology. Lucian was clearly at fault; heโd made Aubree wait years, then left her feeling neglected. Learning Aubree had even argued with her father over this solidified Sonyaโs resolve to intervene fairly.
โAubreeโs right. I object to canceling the engagement. Sheโs waited for Lucian for years; he must take responsibility. Gina, calm them down. Iโll call Lucian. If that fails, Aubree can stay with us for a few days to give them both time to cool off.โ
Immediately after Sonya spoke, she heard a muffled thud on the other end. Her heart sank with worry for Aubree.
Gina seemed surprised. After a moment of silence, she replied, โIโฆ Iโll try.โ
After hanging up, Sonya immediately called Lucian.
At the Farwell residence, Lucian had just tucked Estella into bed when his phone rang. Seeing Sonyaโs name, and remembering her recent insistence on his marrying Aubree, he rubbed his temples. He answered after several rings.
Sonyaโs voice filled his ear. โAubreeโs arguing with her father. Iโm not sure whatโs happening, but you should go check.โ
Lucian frowned. โThatโs their problem. Itโs not appropriate for me to intervene.โ
โAubreeโs defying her father because of you. Do you expect me to go there at this hour? Besides, it sounded violent. I canโt stop him. You should go, at least for Aubreeโs safety. Sheโs just recovered; she canโt be hurt again!โ Sonya chided.
