Chapter 717: Not as Terrified as Before
Roxanne didn't know what Estella whispered to Lucian, only that he looked at her meaningfully before quietly refusing. Immediately, both their gazes swung to her. Lucian wore an oddly innocent expression, while suspicion was etched on Estella's face.
Estella's earlier question in the backyard flashed through Roxanne's mind. Combined with their expressions, she understood the situation perfectly. Amusement and exasperation warred within her at the thought of Estella's determination to get revenge. After a moment's silence, she stepped forward. "Essie's very worried about you, so I should examine you. Besides, it's a problem if you have insomnia."
In other words, she was treating him for Estella's sake.
Lucian raised an eyebrow and glanced at his daughter. Estella nodded emphatically, triumph evident on her face. Lucian chuckled softly and offered Roxanne his wrist.
Roxanne took his wrist, but the warmth emanating from it distracted her from her diagnosis. It should have taken only a minute or two, but it took much longer.
"Never mind if you can't determine the cause. I've been overworked lately. I'll be fine after a few days' rest," Lucian drawled nonchalantly, seeing her difficulty.
At that moment, Roxanne found the problem. Dropping his wrist, she said calmly, "Your liver is slightly inflamed, probably from overwork. Take some medicine to reduce the inflammation, or it will heal with rest."
Lucian nodded.
"It's late. You should take Essie home, Mr. Farwell," Roxanne said, glancing at the clock.
Lucian didn't object. He rose casually, looking down at Estella, who sat on the couch with a reluctant expression. Despite playing with Archie, Benny, and Roxanne all afternoon, she was unwilling to leave, gazing at Roxanne pleadingly.
"Be good, Essie. I'm busy lately, so you can't sleep over. Come anytime you like in the future," Roxanne said apologetically, patting her head.
Archie and Benny chimed in, "Bring Essie often, Mr. Farwell!"
A strange feeling stirred in Roxanne's heart. Their attitude toward Lucian had completely changed since the hot springs trip. They used to be even more averse to him than she was. If this continued, she wouldn't be surprised if they discovered their identities.
The moment she realized this, her brows furrowed slightly. For some reason, she wasn't as terrified as before at the thought of them learning the truth. Was it because of the change in the man before her?
She instinctively glanced at him. Lucian nodded apathetically before gently murmuring to Archie and Benny, "Thank you. I'll do that."
They completely ignored Roxanne, the homeowner. Exasperation flooded her, but she didn't bother to protest.
