Chapter 731: How To Clarify
Roxanne looked at the man before her. The thought that he had come to help, despite his anger, moved her. Softening her expression, she briefly explained the previous day's events.
โMs. Hightower asked Jack to contact me; she wanted to apologize in person. I went to the appointmentโI couldn't refuse her request. I never expected to be photographed. The photo of us holding hands shows Jack supporting me; I almost fell down the stairs. I knew I'd be drinking, so I didn't drive. Jack drove me, as we were going the same way, and he dropped me off at the entrance; he didn't even get out of the car.โ
She knew what explanation he wanted, so she chose her words carefully, hoping to calm him and avoid further complications with the media.
Lucianโs eyes darkened. The suspicion and anger gradually faded, but he quickly noticed something amiss.
โIf Jessica went to apologize, why are only you and Jack in the photo? Where was she?โ
Roxanneโs reply was hesitant, a slight frown creasing her brow. โMs. Hightower asked us to eat first; she was stuck in traffic. The photo was taken while we were waiting for her.โ
A cold glint flashed in Lucianโs eyes as he nodded.
Roxanne, noticing someone filming in the corner, urged, her brows furrowed, โTodayโs news is a misunderstanding. You donโt need to be angry, Mr. Farwell. Please go.โ
Lucian followed her gaze. His eyes narrowed dangerously at the camera. The reporter holding it trembled, fled in fear.
Only then did Lucian turn. โCan you get in the car, Ms. Jarvis?โ he asked indifferently.
Roxanne, surprised by his insistence, felt helpless. โThis involves so many people. I donโt want to affect those who are uninvolved.โ
At her words, his eyes darkened, and she tensed.
โSuch a small matter wonโt affect me,โ Lucian said, grabbing her wrist and leading her to the car. โNor do I want to be irrelevant in your eyes.โ
Her heart skipped a beat. Before she could react, he had seated her in his car. Outside, reporters stared dumbfoundedly, cameras raised but unused.
As the car pulled away from the research institute, the noise faded into silence. Roxanne stared blankly at Lucianโs impassive profile, unknowingly calming down.
Neither spoke during the drive. Roxanne didn't ask where he was taking her, only contemplating how to clarify the rumors. She snapped back to reality as they arrived at her house.
โRest these two days. Iโll handle the online chaos and pick up Archie and Benny,โ Lucian said solemnly.
Roxanne hesitated. โItโs fine. Iโll have a friend pick them up.โ
โWhat if reporters find the kindergarten?โ Lucian frowned. โCan your friend handle it?โ
The thought of reporters harassing her children filled Roxanne with dread. She agreed. โIn that caseโฆ Iโll leave them in your care, Mr. Farwell.โ
