Chapter 799: Stay and Look After Mommy
Madilyn kept Archie and Benny company at Roxanne's house, awaiting their mother's return. Usually, the children pestered her for games, but that night, they were unusually quiet and distracted. Madilyn feigned annoyance. "What's wrong with you two? Don't you like me anymore?"
Archie and Benny shook their heads. "We do, Aunt Madilyn."
"Then tell me what's wrong. You both seem upset," Madilyn pressed gently.
"W-We're just worried about Mommy," they replied, exchanging nervous glances. "We don't want her to drink too much. Don't mind us, Aunt Madilyn."
They were actually worried whether Lucian had caught up with Roxanne or allowed her to be with Jack, especially after their earlier argument.
Sensing their reluctance to talk, Madilyn ceased questioning and sat beside them. She reflected, I thought I finally understood Roxanne's relationship with Lucian, but that argument...
A car pulled up outside the mansion. Madilyn, jolting from her reverie, glanced at the clock. It was half past ten. "Who could that be at this hour?" she wondered.
"Is Mommy home?" Archie and Benny asked simultaneously.
Madilyn frowned. Roxanne should be able to open the door herselfโฆ Approaching the intercom, she saw Lucian carrying a weakly slumped Roxanne. Madilyn blushed slightly at their intimacy, then quickly turned to the children. "Ahemโฆ I think you two should go upstairs."
They refused, their eyes fixed on the door. As Lucian rang the doorbell, Madilyn had no choice but to open it.
"Whoa, she reeks of alcohol! How much did she drink?" Madilyn exclaimed, noting the strong scent.
Archie and Benny rushed to Roxanne, tugging at her shirt. "Mommy?"
Roxanne, roused from her stupor, merely glanced at them before closing her eyes again. They were used to this; Roxanne often came home drunk. Normally, they fetched her water and medication. But seeing Lucian carrying her, they tugged at his sleeve. "Mommy looks really drunk, Mr. Farwell. Could you stay and look after her?"
Madilyn bristled slightly. She knew Lucian would care for Roxanne, but resented the children bypassing her, Roxanne's best friend. She was about to offer her help, but the children were quicker. "Aunt Madilyn needs to go to work early tomorrow, so she can't stay up late," they explained, looking directly at her.
