โI believe Mr. Farwell will be happy to,โ Jack said ambiguously, glancing at Roxanne. Her sharp senses picked up on his gaze; his words intensified her feeling that something was amiss. Colby's eyes also darkened, noticing Jack's cryptic look. Jack's eyes, though Colby didn't know the full story, revealed much. The last time Roxanne was in danger, the Farwell Group had intervened. Now, as Herbscape Group's technical advisor, she was embroiled in a major scandal. Unless Lucian was behind it all โ and Colby had seen him at her house in the middle of the night โ no one would believe it. Lucian and Roxanne were already close; now Jack was in the picture. Colby felt a surge of jealousy, acutely aware of the other men's competence compared to his own. He wouldn't stand a chance unless he surpassed them, unless he became more outstanding than Roxanne herself.
Roxanne, lost in conflicted thoughts about Lucian and Estella, was startled back to reality. "Ms. Jarvis, watch out!" Jack's voice cut through her reverie. She stopped, but it was too late. Preoccupied with Lucian and Estella, she hadn't noticed her surroundings, losing her footing and tumbling forward. Her heart pounded; she couldn't scream, only clutching the precious medicinal herbs to her chest. Their acquisition had been difficult; their loss would be devastating. She tumbled down several flights of stairs. Just as impact seemed inevitable, strong arms caught her, steadying her fall.
Catching her breath, Roxanne clung to those arms before regaining her composure. "Are you okay?" Jack asked, helping her stand. Their proximity startled her; color flushed her cheeks. "Thank you, Mr. Damaris," she stammered.
Jack narrowed his eyes, studying her. "Something's on your mind, Ms. Jarvis."
Roxanne shook her head, striving for calm. "It's nothing. I was careless," she said, checking the herbs. "Thank goodness they're unharmed." She sighed in relief.
"A few bottles of herbs," Jack frowned. "Your safety should be your priority. The Damaris family can afford replacements. You are far more valuable than these herbs."
Roxanne offered a small smile. "Thank you. I'll be more careful." With a slight nod, she entered the storage room.
Colby, following close behind, witnessed the scene โ Jack holding Roxanne. He froze, his face darkening at their intimate pose. The thought of his own reaction if he had been the one to catch herโฆ
