Chapter 879: Something More
After watching Roxanne enter the taxi, Jack turned and frowned at the man beside him. Their earlier interaction suggested the man's interest in Roxanne, but his identity was unsettling. Jack cast a mocking glance at Colby.
Only when the taxi disappeared did Colby meet Jack's gaze. "Mr. Damaris," he began, a fleeting, unusual feeling quickly suppressed. Jack nodded calmly.
"Mr. Damaris, you seem aware of Dr. Jarvis's distress," Colby continued. "Otherwise, you wouldn't have intervened. Besides, they clearly arrived together."
Jack arched a brow. "Dr. Galloway, what are you implying?" The disdain in Jack's tone was palpable. Colby suppressed his anger. After a pause, he said calmly, "I believe Dr. Jarvis is troubled by something concerning Mr. Farwell. Earlier, her expression darkened when I mentioned Herbscape Group."
Jack feigned surprise. "Is that so? I didn't notice." He was mocking Colby's focus on Roxanne. Colby had hoped to instigate conflict between Jack and Lucian, exploiting their rivalry to win Roxanne. He hadn't anticipated Jack's preemptive mockery.
He stared at Jack warily. "Mr. Damaris, what do you mean?"
Jack raised his eyebrows. "Nothing. I'm merely curious. Dr. Galloway, you seem to know a great deal about Ms. Jarvis."
Despite his limited knowledge of Roxanne's past, Colby refused to show weakness. After a brief silence, he nodded calmly.
Jack smiled meaningfully. "Really? I always assumed you were merely colleagues. After your comments, I realize I've misunderstood. But what's happening between Ms. Jarvis and Mr. Farwell? Why did you imply a fight?"
Colby frowned. He knew something existed between Roxanne and Lucian; otherwise, Lucian wouldn't have appeared at her home or defended her publicly. He believed Lucian was pursuing Roxanne, but Jack's tone suggested a deeper complexity.
A realization dawned, and his face fell. Jack watched him with amusement. "Dr. Galloway, what's wrong? You needn't share anything you're uncomfortable with."
Jack had worked hard to uncover the nature of Lucian and Roxanne's relationship, a secret carefully guarded by Roxanne and the Farwell family. Only a select few knew. He was certain Colby wasn't among them. Colby had merely played along, suspecting Jack's feelings for Roxanne and aiming to incite jealousy, hoping to benefit from any ensuing conflict between Jack and Lucian.
