Chapter 902: Will Bring You Camping
Roxanne, wanting to leave promptly after dinner, departed with Archie and Benny. Estella, however, clung to her shirt, reluctant to let her go.
Leaning down, Roxanne stroked Estella’s head, gently coaxing, “It’s late, sweetheart; I must go home.” A moment later, seeing Estella’s disappointed face, she added, “I’ll visit again soon.”
She meant only to comfort the child, but Estella took her seriously. “When?” she asked, her face solemn.
Roxanne was momentarily stunned. Lucian, who usually intervened, remained silent, seemingly ignoring her predicament. Unable to tell Estella the truth, she hesitated, watching the girl’s hopeful gaze.
Estella, oblivious to Roxanne's internal struggle, continued, “Archie and Benny said you take them on fun outings. Can I go too, Ms. Jarvis?”
Roxanne’s eyes flickered. Archie and Benny immediately added, “Let’s go camping next week! That would be fun!” Roxanne recalled her past camping trips with colleagues abroad; they had been delightful.
Estella's anticipation soared. Her shining eyes made it difficult for Roxanne to refuse. Then, unexpectedly, Lucian’s scornful voice cut through the air, “Essie, Ms. Jarvis is very busy and probably has no time.”
Roxanne’s eyes narrowed. She glared at him, a mixture of surprise and annoyance evident in her expression. He hadn't needed to point out his earlier misunderstanding, much less remember it and mock her!
Estella's eyes dimmed; disappointment clouded her face. Feeling helpless, Roxanne suppressed her irritation and reassured Estella, “I promise I’ll take you camping with Archie and Benny next week.”
Estella’s head lifted, though skepticism lingered. Archie and Benny quickly interjected, “Mommy never lies!” Estella, trusting them implicitly, smiled. She offered Roxanne her pinky finger.
Roxanne, momentarily surprised, understood. Amusement and warmth filled her heart. She linked her pinky finger with Estella’s in a promise. Estella finally relaxed.
“It’s late,” Roxanne said, smiling. “I’m going home with Archie and Benny. Sleep tight, Essie.”
Estella waved goodbye as they left. Lucian watched them go, his expression dark and unreadable.
