Chapter 927: A Tight Hug

“Daddy!” Estella called anxiously as Lucian reached for the door. He paused, asking, “Yes, Essie?”

The little girl looked aggrieved. She’d expected him to yield to her earlier frustration and anger. Instead, he hadn’t even acknowledged it. Estella was unaccustomed to such treatment. Lucian raised an eyebrow. “Go to bed early if you have nothing to say.”

As he started to close the door again, she piped up, “Will you come with us tomorrow?”

A frown creased Lucian’s face, but he didn’t answer immediately. Estella lowered her head, fiddling with her fingers. “It’s the weekend. You can spend time with us, right?”

Despite his falling out with Roxanne, Estella believed a family camping trip would reconcile them. She remembered how Roxanne had previously avoided them, but a previous trip together had improved their relationship. She hoped this trip would have the same effect.

Lucian understood her reasoning. He softened at the mixture of excitement and hurt on her face. But the thought of Roxanne instantly cooled his enthusiasm. That woman is always suspicious of me; they won't enjoy the trip if I go.

He decided to refuse. “I have to work tomorrow, Essie. I’ll join you next time, okay?”

Estella pouted, though she'd anticipated this.

Lucian consoled her patiently. “Things came up at work, and I have to attend to them. I would join you if I could.” He stroked her head.

Estella looked at him with pleading eyes, seeking his sympathy. Lucian remained firm. “I know you want me to reconcile with Ms. Jarvis on this trip. I would if I had the time, but I’m really busy.”

Estella, understanding his explanation, nodded.

“Be a good girl and listen to Ms. Jarvis tomorrow. Take care of yourself, and don’t cause any trouble, okay?” Lucian said softly.

Estella nodded, though a hint of disappointment lingered. If things don't improve, I don't know when Daddy and Ms. Jarvis will reconcile.

Lucian, unaware of her thoughts, assumed she was still upset with him. He sat beside her bed.

She looked at him quizzically.

“I’ll leave only after you fall asleep,” he said in a low voice.

Estella’s eyes brightened; she knew his heart had softened. She sat up and gave him a tight hug.

Lucian finally understood her intentions. Though she tried again to persuade him to go on the trip, he remained silent. Finally, she gave up, crawling back under her covers.

When her breathing evened out, Lucian left the room. Closing the door behind him, he stood outside, feeling conflicted. He was surprised by Estella’s attachment to Roxanne and her unwavering support of her. If they ever find out they're related, I think Essie would abandon me.
