Chapter 961: Why Would I Be Unable To?
Upon hearing this, Roxanne and Madilyn exchanged doubtful glances. They had contacted nearly every research institute in Horington capable of developing the bacterium; only one confirmed losing it. Although this occurred a fortnight ago, the bacteria would remain viable if properly preserved. Madilyn, aware of this, immediately asked, "How did you lose the bacteria? Have you made any findings?"
The response was unexpectedly helpful. "A researcher likely took it," the person admitted frankly. Madilyn was confused.
"We have no concrete evidence, but we strongly suspect this. Two days after the bacteria disappeared, that researcher resigned and hasn't been heard from since," the person explained.
Before Madilyn could respond, Roxanne asked, "What's the researcher's name?"
The person, startled by the shift in speakers, paused before answering, "Her name is Nancy Lowther."
"Got it. Thank you," Roxanne replied.
Madilyn echoed her gratitude. "I'll treat you next time we meet."
After brief pleasantries, they hung up. As Madilyn put away her phone, both women considered the information, their expressions grim. They had a leadโthe name of the employee who stole the bacteriaโsignificantly simplifying their investigation. And they had Benny, their hacker.
They exchanged a meaningful look. Roxanne descended to summon Benny.
"Mommy, what's wrong?" her son asked, confused as she led him to the desk.
She tapped the screen. "Please help me investigate this person."
Benny immediately focused on the screen, his expression serious. Roxanne shared everything she knew about Nancy Lowther, only then realizing the limitations of her information: Nancy's full name and former employment at the institute.
"It's fine if you can't find anything. I'll think of another way," she said, unwilling to pressure him.
Benny looked puzzled. "Why would I be unable to?" He felt she had provided sufficient information.
He turned to the computer and began typing. Soon, he hacked into the institute's system, retrieving Nancy's file and discovering her recent activities. He looked up at Roxanne. "This person left the country two days ago. Do you need something from her, Mommy? I can help locate her." He returned to the keyboard.
Roxanne and Madilyn were stunned. They knew Benny was a computer expert, but this was their first firsthand witness of his skill.
Seeing his readiness to continue, Roxanne gently intervened. "It's okay. No need."
Benny obediently stopped. "Why do you want to investigate her, Mommy?" he asked.
Roxanne naturally avoided the truth. "There are some things I need to clarify with her." She reviewed the information Benny had found. It was more than enough.
"Thank you, darling," she said, caressing his head.
