Chapter 965: Walk Out Alive
The search lasted all morning. Cayden, his face grim, returned with his subordinates in the afternoon. โWe found nothing, Mr. Farwell,โ he reported. Even Cory, an excellent private investigator, left Cayden wondering how he maintained contact with his employers. Cayden found no evidence of how the mastermind instructed Cory to spy on Roxanne, nor any proof exposing Coryโs profession.
Cory played the sympathy card. โMr. Farwell, I told you no one instructed me,โ he claimed. Lucian, having waited half a day for an answer he didnโt receive, glared furiously at Coryโs feigned innocence.
โIf no one instructed you, why did you stalk her?โ he demanded.
Cory blinked innocently. โBecause I find Ms. Jarvis attractive. I was trying my hand at photography, taking pictures of her.โ His earlier nervousness vanished, replaced by a newfound boldness after Caydenโs fruitless investigation.
Lucianโs rage simmered. He fixed Cory with a deadly glare. Cory, however, remained silent, standing impassively in the room.
โMr. Farwell, what if weโฆโ Caydenโs eyes hardened, unable to tolerate Coryโs disrespect. โThere are many ways to interrogate a person. Weโll find one that makes him talk.โ
Coryโs panic was palpable. He sensed the threat in Caydenโs voice.
Then, Lucianโs deep voice cut through the tension. โRelease him.โ
โMr. Farwell!โ Cayden protested. โHow can we let him go? We haven't gotten anything from him! He deserves a lesson for his arrogance!โ
Cory, equally stunned, couldnโt believe his ears.
Lucian repeated, โRelease him!โ
Seeing Lucianโs determined expression, Cayden reluctantly gestured to his subordinates. Cory, utterly unprepared for this turn of events, hesitated, unsure if his release was genuine.
Lucianโs impatient voice snapped him out of his stupor. โWhat are you waiting for? Scram!โ
Cory, regaining his senses, bowed hastily. โAll right, all right. Iโll leave now.โ He stumbled backward and fled Lucianโs office.
Caydenโs fury erupted. โMr. Farwell, are you just going to let him go? Iโm sure heโs not innocent!โ
Lucian gazed into the distance before replying, โKeep an eye on him. Whatโs the point of interrogating him? He wonโt cooperate. Farwell Group may be influential, but we have no evidence against him.โ
He was determined to gather evidence first.
Cayden understood instantly. Lucian wasnโt letting Cory go; he was letting his guard down to gather more information. Caydenโs anger subsided, and he ordered his men to follow Cory.
Meanwhile, Cory breathed a sigh of relief once outside the Farwell Group lobby. A seasoned private investigator, heโd heard rumors about Lucianโs ruthlessness. Heโd expected to be killed. Escaping alive felt miraculous.
