Chapter 968: Want to See Essie

“What?” Sonya frowned. “It’s bad enough Roxanne took my granddaughter out; she even made her ill.”

Aubree offered a fleeting smile before composing herself. “The person I sent to protect Essie witnessed it, but he lacks medical training. Believing Ms. Jarvis possesses some medical knowledge and could treat Essie, he didn't reveal himself.” Sonya’s face darkened. “Is Essie seriously ill?”

Aubree feigned contemplation. “My infected friends described excruciating pain. Essie is only a child…”

Sonya understood the implication. A child couldn’t endure such pain. Roxanne had abandoned Essie before, and now she was responsible for her suffering. What was Roxanne’s intention?

“I wanted to check on Essie, but you know Lucian’s attitude,” Aubree said, fueling the tension. Sonya declared, “I’ll go myself!”

She grabbed her bag, preparing to leave. Aubree quickly intervened. “Mrs. Farwell, please don't mention I told you. Lucian dislikes me already. If he finds out…”

It was true. Sonya worried about her granddaughter, but also felt Aubree’s efforts were unappreciated.

“Don’t worry. I know what to say.”

Sonya left. Aubree didn’t stop her. Once Sonya’s car was gone, Aubree left as well, hoping Sonya's intervention would divert Lucian’s attention from her own actions.

Meanwhile, at the Farwell residence, Cayden stood in the study, grim-faced.

“Mr. Farwell, the private investigator is incredibly elusive. Our men have followed him for a week without success.”

Lucian looked somber. “Continue following him.” He wanted to see how long the man could hide.

Cayden left. He encountered Catalina at the door.

“Mr. Farwell, Mrs. Farwell is downstairs. She’s waiting.” Catalina seemed troubled.

Lucian frowned, contemplating. His mother’s previous visits had been Aubree-related, but he hadn’t interacted with Aubree recently.

After a moment, Lucian rose.

“Mr. Farwell, Mrs. Farwell doesn’t look pleased,” Catalina whispered as he passed.

Lucian nodded impassively and went downstairs, where he found his mother sitting on the couch, her expression unfriendly.

“Why are you here?” Sonya, already worried about Estella, was further annoyed by his delay.

Lucian frowned, looking at Catalina. The housekeeper was at a loss. Lucian, however, simply sat and asked, “Why didn’t you call? I could have come over.”

Sonya slammed the coffee table. “I want to see Essie! Where is she?”

Lucian’s eyes darkened, understanding Catalina’s earlier unease.
