Chapter 967

Aubree, having finally received permission, smiled and ascended the stairs. Sonya, having just awakened from her nap in the master bedroom, opened the door at a knock.

โ€œMrs. Farwell,โ€ Aubree greeted politely, โ€œI hope Iโ€™m not disturbing you.โ€

Sonya smiled in return. โ€œNot at all. I just woke up.โ€

Aubree approached, affectionately taking Sonyaโ€™s arm. โ€œI brought you some gifts. Letโ€™s go downstairs and look at them.โ€

โ€œOh, youโ€™re too sweet,โ€ Sonya replied, glancing at the gifts. โ€œYou didnโ€™t have to. Iโ€™m just happy youโ€™re here.โ€

Aubree smiled. โ€œI had to; I havenโ€™t visited in a while.โ€

They descended to the living hall, Sonya barely glancing at the gifts. The butler collected them. After they settled onto the couch, he served coffee.

As Aubree sipped her coffee, an idea sparked. โ€œI was planning to take you to the suburbs; the scenery is lovely. Many of my friends have been walking there.โ€

Sonyaโ€™s interest piqued, but before she could respond, Aubree continued, โ€œBut I heard that bacteria is growing rapidly in the warm weather. People whoโ€™ve visited have fallen ill with vomiting and diarrhea.โ€

Sonya immediately dismissed the idea. โ€œLetโ€™s not risk it. We can visit another time.โ€

Aubree nodded. A few seconds later, a frown creased her brow.

Sonya noticed. โ€œWhatโ€™s on your mind?โ€

Aubree feigned realization. โ€œIf Iโ€™m not mistaken, Ms. Jarvis took Essie out a few days ago, so Iโ€™m not sureโ€ฆโ€

She trailed off, carefully studying Sonyaโ€™s reaction. Sonyaโ€™s face darkened at the thought of her granddaughter with Roxanne again. Aubree inwardly gloated.

โ€œHow did you know they went out?โ€ Sonya asked.

โ€œIโ€™ve been worried about Essie since her last disappearance,โ€ Aubree explained, โ€œso I have men watching her whenever she leaves the house.โ€

Sonya, realizing Aubreeโ€™s actions, lowered her guard against her, her hostility shifting toward Roxanne. Iโ€™ve warned her many times to stay away from Essie. How dare she defy me?

Aubree pressed her advantage. โ€œPerhaps Ms. Jarvis simply wanted a stroll and wasnโ€™t paying attention to the environment. Now, Iโ€™m worriedโ€ฆโ€

Again, she paused.

Sonyaโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œWorried? About what?โ€

โ€œEssie might have caught an infection. I wonder how sheโ€™s feeling,โ€ Aubree voiced her concern.
