Chapter 970: I Give Up

Sonya didn't mention reconciliation. Lucian tensed at this omission. Sonya continued, “I raised Essie. I will never allow you to give her away!”

When Lucian realized his mother was digressing, he rubbed his temples. “It’s not what you think. Essie fell ill two days ago. She’s recuperating at Ms. Jarvis’s.”

He suspected Sonya was hiding something and disbelieved her. He felt she already knew what happened two days prior. He decided honesty was best. Sonya now had a legitimate reason for her fury.

“Why didn’t you tell me Essie was ill? I can’t believe you left her with Roxanne!” Lucian merely frowned. He wouldn’t argue.

“Roxanne abandoned her first! Something bad always happens to Essie when she’s with Roxanne! Yet you still let them be together! Even if you aren’t worried, I am!”

Fury etched Sonya’s face. “I don’t care what you think. Bring Essie back now! If you won’t care for her, I will!”

Lucian was baffled by his mother's belief that he didn't want Estella. Seeing Sonya's anger, he calmly explained, “Essie is recuperating, but Ms. Jarvis is highly skilled. I’m reassured knowing Essie is in her care.”

Sonya disagreed. “With our wealth, we can afford any doctor. Why Roxanne? Bring Essie back. I’ll find her the best doctor!”

Lucian remained silent. Seeing his refusal, Sonya’s face fell. “Forget about reconciling with Roxanne. As long as I live, she will never marry into the Farwell family!”

“You overthink,” Lucian finally said. Even if he considered reconciliation, Roxanne wouldn't agree. Sonya was perplexed.

Lucian patiently explained, suppressing his frustration. “Essie was critical. Ms. Jarvis brewed traditional medicine, alleviating her symptoms. No one understands Essie better.”

It sounded reasonable, but Sonya believed Roxanne caused Estella’s illness. She remained unconvinced.

Lucian reassured her, “Leaving Essie with Roxanne is best right now. Once she recovers, I’ll bring her back.”

He had no intention of bringing Estella back immediately. Sonya was furious but decided against further argument.

Since he refuses, I'll do it myself! she thought. It's no big deal! I know where she is. Controlling her anger, Sonya adopted a calm demeanor. “So be it. I give up!”

She strode from the manor, seemingly unconcerned. Lucian found her departure strange but let it go. Sonya drove towards Roxanne’s home.
