Chapter 971

Roxanne was preparing lunch with the children when the doorbell rang. Assuming it was Lucian or Madilyn, she opened the door without hesitation. Seeing Sonya standing there, she froze.

"It's been a while," Sonya said, appraising Roxanne.

Roxanne recovered, lowering her eyes. "Mrs. Farwell," she greeted. Sonya responded with a cold hum. "Is this how you treat your guests? Leaving them at the door?"

Roxanne frowned, remembering Sonya's actions at the research institute. We haven't met since then. I wonder why she's here, especially with Essie present. Last time, Sonya destroyed the institute because of my proximity to Essie. I fear what she might do now. But perhaps Sonya already knew Essie was here.

Roxanne stepped aside. "Please," she offered.

Sonya entered and surveyed the living room. "Where's Essie?"

Roxanne's heart leaped. Sonya knew. Before she could answer, the three children burst from the kitchen, beamingโ€”until they saw Sonya.

"Grandma..." Estella whispered hesitantly. I remember Grandma doesn't like Ms. Jarvis, and she looks unhappy.

Sonya examined Estella closely, visibly relieved when she saw the child was unharmed. "Essie, come to Grandma," she said, beckoning.

Estella hesitated, remaining motionless. "Come here now," Sonya repeated, frowning and shooting Roxanne a displeased look. She clearly blamed Roxanne for Estella's reluctance.

Sensing Sonya's anger, Estella slowly approached, fearing Roxanne would be the target. Sonya embraced Estella, examining her again. "I heard you were sick. Are you feeling better now?"

Estella glanced at Roxanne. Roxanne smiled reassuringly. "Essie rested for a week and is much better," she said warmly.

Sonya immediately declared, "Since you're feeling much better, come home with me." Estella's brow furrowed; her reluctance was evident.

Sonya, understanding Estella's hesitation, turned to Roxanne. "I heard from Lucian that Essie recovered well thanks to your care. Since she's alright now, I want to take her home. You have no objections, right?"

Her voice lacked gratitude. In Sonya's view, Roxanne, as Estella's biological mother, was merely fulfilling her expected duty.
