Chapter 997: Win Her Over
Roxanne awoke early, having stayed up all night. She needed to leave immediately for the research institute; Jack was to deliver the medicinal herbs promptly, and she didn't want to keep him waiting. After dressing, she went downstairs, where she found her two sons at the dining table, looking worried.
She sat beside Archie and Benny, kissing each on the cheek. Noticing dark circles under their eyes, she frowned. "You two didn't sleep well?" she asked. They shook their heads, Benny explaining in a small voice, "I had a nightmare, and it woke Archie."
Though Roxanne sensed an excuse, she merely said, "Come find me next time you have a bad dream." Benny nodded obediently. Roxanne ate quickly, eager to depart. Just as she finished, the doorbell rang.
She froze, then opened the door to find Jack. A frown creased her face. "Mr. Damaris, why are you here? You should be at Damaris Group preparing the herbs."
He smiled. "I hope I haven't disturbed you. It's still early; I came to pick you up while my assistant handles the herbs. And I wanted to see Archie and Benny. I felt bad for not visiting them sooner."
The boys, hearing him, rushed from the dining area, excitedly asking, "Mommy, are Mr. Farwell and Essie here?" Their happy expressions faltered upon seeing Jack, their disappointment evident.
Jack, ignoring their reaction, greeted them warmly. Benny then asked, "Are you here to drive Mommy to work?"
Jack nodded. "You're a clever boy, Benny! Yes, your mommy needs to leave soon."
Roxanne, ready to go, caressed their heads. "I'm going to work. Ms. Lane will take you to school." She nodded to Jack, indicating she was ready.
The boys, however, were hesitant. Their unspoken anxietiesโthe unresolved issues between their parents and Jack's presenceโwere clear. They stared at Roxanne with reproach.
Roxanne, speechless, bent down as Jack entered the car. "This is just work," she promised solemnly. "I'll get your agreement before making any plans to find you another father."
Finally, the boys relented and let her go.
