Nathaniel, having kept Serena company, was called away by his assistant. Before leaving, he reminded Paisley not to miss the gala.

The thought of seeing Dominick made Paisley hesitant, but she'd committed. "Worst case," she mused, "quick hello, quick exit." "Maria," she called, "the gown, please."

Maria's eyes widened as Paisley emerged. "Emery's work is incredible," she breathed, "but you make it shine."

The sky-blue silk gown, embroidered with delicate white flowers from neckline to waist, was stunning. A thigh-high slit, edged with matching embroidery, flattered her figure. Emery had embroidered each flower herself, a testament to her affection.

Adjusting her hair, Paisley countered Maria's praise, "Emery said it's versatile, flattering any figure." "Beauty isn't reserved for the conventionally beautiful," she added.

Maria, charmed, considered commissioning a simpler gown from Emery.

By the time Paisley finished her makeup, it was nearly time to go. She'd planned to meet Emery and Lucy, but Lucy had bailed, and Emery and Teddy were unreachable.

With the gala starting, Paisley had no choice but to go alone, leaving Serena with Maria. Serena clung to her. "Come back early, Mom! You're so beautiful, I'm worried!" Paisley laughed, promising a quick return.

The party was bustling. Marissa, Dominick's date, commanded attention. Every woman vied for her favor, Alexis basking in the reflected glory. Grayson's absence gave Marissa unfettered access to Dominick.

Moving close, she whispered, "Dom, I was impulsive today. I lost the race, let my emotions get the best of me." She watched his face. "I overestimated my abilities, fell off the horse. I didn't mean to slander Ms. Sutton. I just… did something stupid."

Taking a breath, she continued, "I'll apologize to Ms. Sutton in front of everyone. It was my fault." Accepting her mistake, she'd apologize to Paisley and move on, securing her place by Dominick's side.
