Chapter 75

Marissa’s head drooped, a feigned embarrassment softening Dominick’s stern face. “You’ve always been so competitive,” he sighed.

“Well, with someone as outstanding as you, how could I not try my best?” she teased, her mood visibly lighter. She knew he’d forgiven her; their bond was too strong for this. Besides, she was the one who’d been hurt, the one who’d lied. The admission seemed to settle things.

The change in the crowd’s gaze was palpable—intense, curious. Perfect. Her earlier closeness to Dominick, her shifting expressions—demure one moment, playful the next—had fueled speculation. Dominick’s initial impassivity had melted into a resigned, almost affectionate exasperation. The wedding rumors swirled.

Nathaniel swaggered over, raising his glass. He clapped Dominick on the shoulder, “Nice place, huh?”

Dominick glanced at the patted spot. “It’s alright.”

Nathaniel grinned. “Impossible to please, huh?” Dominick merely raised an eyebrow.

Back in school, they’d been opposites. Dominick, the perfect student, striving for flawless execution; his only failure, his marriage to Paisley. Nathaniel, a mischievous underachiever, lived life on a whim. This club was his first serious venture.

Marissa offered a warm smile. “Nathaniel! It’s been a while.”

He barely acknowledged her, a curt nod. “Yeah.”

Her smile froze. The public snub stung, humiliation burning under the watchful eyes of the crowd.

Nathaniel turned back to Dominick, a smirk playing on his lips. “Heard the news. When’s the wedding?” He couldn’t fathom Dominick with Marissa; he’d dismissed her in high school.

Dominick frowned, ready to deny the rumors, but Nathaniel’s attention snapped elsewhere. His face lit up, a wide grin splitting his features. “Oh! My mentor, Ms. Sutton!”
