Derek had thought Evelyn's name sounded familiar, and now he knew why. Why hadn't she told him about her relationship with Michael? Was that why she'd been avoiding him? Why hadn't he considered this when Michael first asked about his business with Evelyn? Why hadn't he noticed their cold greeting in his office? he mused, glancing at Michael.
Sensing Derek's piercing blue eyes, Michael offered an apologetic look. Derek merely returned a look that said they would talk later.
Meanwhile, Evelyn quickly recovered from Sandra's theatrics. Realizing Sandra's manipulation, she smiled. It was obvious Sandra was trying to make her look bad. Evelyn could already hear guests whispering. She could hear them questioning her, discussing how she'd supposedly run off on the morning of her wedding.
Knowing Sandra's drama was pointless, Evelyn decided to play along. "I'm being mean to you, right? Then I guess this shouldn't be a problem," Evelyn said, emptying her glass on Sandra and slapping her. Everyone gasped. Derek frowned. What was happening? Although he didn't know her well, he knew she wasn't usually this aggressive—or maybe she was, considering her inability to keep her personal life private, he mused as Evelyn's father, Eric, stormed over and roughly pushed her away. "What the hell is wrong with you, Evelyn? Why do you keep embarrassing me and bringing shame to this family?" Eric growled. Evelyn shook her head, unsurprised.
"What's going on, Evie? Why is Sandra on the floor, and why did you pour wine on her?" Claire asked. Sandra, having feigned crying, stood with Eric's help.
"I was only asking her why she was being cold and wouldn't come home," Sandra sobbed, "but she said I was jealous and threatened by her. I tried to explain, but she angrily said she'd never forgive me for remaining friends with Michael."
Eric shook his head at Evelyn, while Derek's mind raced.
"You're a disappointment! You brought shame six years ago, and now, you're doing it again! Apologize to your sister or get out!" Eric yelled.
"Eric, calm down," Claire pleaded, looking at Evelyn with concern. She knew Evelyn wasn't usually troublesome.
"I won't apologize. I didn't do anything wrong," Evelyn said, clenching her fists, determined not to cry—especially not in front of Sandra.
"Did you hear her? I never wanted her here! Now see what she did to her sister?" Eric yelled at his wife.
Derek watched, frowning at Eric's harshness. Unable to bear the scene, he decided to rescue Evelyn, despite his anger.
"I want you out of here! Get out, or I'll have you thrown out!" Eric yelled. Before Evelyn could respond, Derek stepped forward and took her hand.
Blinded by tears, Evelyn couldn't see her rescuer, but she recognized Derek's cologne and touch. She tried to pull away, but he dragged her out. Michael and Sandra exchanged glances, wondering what Derek was doing.
"And don't come back until you come to your senses!" her father called after them.
Once outside, Evelyn jerked her hand free. She hadn't expected to see Derek at the party, especially considering the sensitive information released about him just hours earlier.
"What do you want!" Evelyn demanded, tears finally overwhelming her.
"What do you mean? I couldn't stand watching your family treat you that way. What were you doing in there? Why did you do that? And why didn't you tell me you were" Derek trailed off, unable to say "Michael's ex."
"What does it matter to you if my family embarrasses me?" Evelyn asked, angrily brushing away tears.
Seeing her distress, Derek momentarily forgot their misunderstanding and stepped closer, wanting to comfort her.
"Eve."
Evelyn stepped back. "Don't! Keep your distance. Maintain the same energy you gave me this morning. Ignore me as you did earlier." Derek's hands dropped to his sides.
"Why are you being unreasonable? I'm only trying to help. Come with me. I'll take you home."
"I don't need your help, Derek!" she snapped.
"You realize I should be angry, right?" Derek pointed out.
"Yes, you should be. Let's communicate through our lawyers."
"Lawyers? What for?" Derek asked, confused.
"Haven't you thought about the nondisclosure agreement you had me sign? That's why I've been at your beck and call. If you sue me, your lawyers can call mine," Evelyn said, walking away, leaving Derek staring after her in confusion.
