“Mrs. Sutton,” The color drained from the driver’s face instantly. Having worked for Audrey for many years, he had slipped up before, but Audrey had never punished him this severely!
The driver tried to explain, “Mrs. Sutton, I just misspoke—”
“Take him away.” Audrey didn’t even spare the driver another glance as her aides helped the driver up from the ground and led him away.
Freya always knew Audrey for her charitable front, but she had never seen her ruthless side until that moment. Perhaps Audrey had always been this way, only showing her benevolent side to the public. Why would she dismiss a long-time loyal employee over a misstep if she were truly charitable?
Audrey asked, “Freya, I called you here to ask if you’ve heard about the news.”
“Audrey, what news are you talking about?” Freya pretended to be confused as she stared at Audrey. Audrey pulled out her phone, displaying the headline about Freya inheriting the Dawson Group and partnering with the Beckett Group.
“Was that two billion from Ronan?” There was a hint of accusation in Audrey’s tone.
Freya knew Audrey would bring this up but hadn’t expected the news to leak so quickly.
“Audrey, it’s a rumor. The Beckett and the Dawson Group are engaged in a normal business collaboration…”
“Regardless of the nature of the business, you’re engaged to Kieran. It’s inappropriate for you to be so close to Ronan.” Audrey’s tone cooled. “Besides, as a woman who’s promised to another, the Dawson Group could be managed by your brother. Zack might have been impertinent, but he wasn’t entirely wrong. You should focus more on your fiancé and less on the company. Men don’t like overly ambitious women.”
Hearing Audrey’s words, Freya couldn’t help but laugh. “Audrey, the company is my inheritance from my father, and I won’t hand it over to anyone else. Besides, Mr. Sutton’s interests lie elsewhere. No matter what I do, I can’t change that fact. Instead of advising me to appease Mr. Sutton, perhaps you should advise him not to stray.”
“What are you implying? Are you dissatisfied with this engagement?” Audrey frowned, displeased with Freya’s words. She used to appreciate Freya for being timid and compliant. However, Freya’s recent behavior had started to get under her skin.
“Audrey, I’m not a good match for Mr. Sutton. If he’s so fond of Ms. Harwood, why not let them be happy together?”
When Freya mentioned Eloise, Audrey took a deep breath and said, “I’ve told you not to worry about Eloise. If Kieran wants to keep things ambiguous with her, let him. In the end, only you can be Mrs. Sutton. With status and position, what more could you want? Women need to be content.”
Freya listened to Audrey’s words and found them ridiculous. Her naivety in her past life was due to being poisoned by such rhetoric from Audrey and Johanna. The idea that it was normal for men to philander while women should be content with their lot was absurd.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t see what happened today. You handle it.” After saying this, something else seemed to occur to Audrey. “Also, I remember you took a break from school, right?”
