Chapter 364

โ€œIf you can say, with your hand on your heart, that youโ€™ve got no ties to the Old South Side before we take the plunge, Iโ€™ll believe you.โ€

โ€œYou!โ€ Freyaโ€™s face turned pale.

How was this any different from a witch hunt?

The high beams were already illuminating the broken bridge ahead, and with a resigned sigh, Freya closed her eyes, leaving her fate to the heavens: โ€œSay what you will, but I swear, Iโ€™ve got nothing to do with the Old South Side!โ€

Out of the corner of his eye, Preston saw Freyaโ€™s resignation and, in the nick of time, slammed on the brakes. They stopped less than an inch from the edge. The anticipated crash never came.

When she opened her eyes, Freya saw they were at the other end of the bridge.

โ€œHey, you two!โ€ Not far off, patrol cars were flashing their lights at them.

Soon, two officers got out of a cruiser, one of them shining a flashlight towards them as he approached. The light hit the car window, nearly blinding Freya.

โ€œOut of the car, both of you!โ€ The officerโ€™s tone was brash and commanding.

Freya glanced at Preston, but he showed no intention of opening the door. Instead, he started to reverse the car right in front of the officers.

โ€œGet out of the car, now!โ€ The cop obviously wasnโ€™t expecting them to rebel, and as they ignored his orders and backed up, he was shocked.

โ€œDo you know this is illegal? Get out of the car now!โ€ The officerโ€™s face darkened with anger.

Freya wanted to persuade Preston to comply, but instead, he easily turned the steering wheel and sped off, completely disregarding the traffic cop trailing behind them.

โ€œPreston! Youโ€™re breaking the law!โ€ Freya couldnโ€™t help but remind him from the passenger seat.

โ€œDo I look like Iโ€™m afraid of breaking the law?โ€ Preston drove with one hand, unbothered by the possibility of the police chasing them. Before long, the wail of police sirens sounded from behind, followed by an officer booming over a loudspeaker: โ€œVehicle ahead, stop immediately. You are breaking the law! Vehicle ahead, stop immediately. You are breaking the law! Failure to comply will have consequences!โ€

โ€œPreston!โ€ Freya couldnโ€™t believe Preston could rule Echo City with an iron fist. She admitted that Preston might be a formidable figure abroad. But once back home, abiding by the law was a duty of every citizen. Clearly, no matter if it was abroad or in Echo City, Preston had no plans to do so.

In no time, Prestonโ€™s car was surrounded by police from all directions. Entering a restricted area was dangerous enough, but Preston also fled the scene, a grave offense. Police cars from every direction were honking their warnings at Preston.

Trapped in the middle, Freya unbuckled her seatbelt and urged, โ€œJust drive up and explain things to them!โ€

Preston had no intention of opening the door, but an officer had already approached their car window, pressing a gun against the glass: โ€œGet out of the car now!โ€

โ€œPreston!โ€

The situation escalated, but Preston showed no fear.
