Chapter 366

โ€œReally now?โ€ Prestonโ€™s voice was a mix of challenge and amusement.

โ€œAre you insane? If youโ€™re on a suicide mission, leave me out of it!โ€

Freya tried to yank the car door open, but it was locked from the outside. Outside, a traffic cop, who had been ready to forcefully open the door, paused mid-motion as he answered a call on his phone. The surrounding cars, trapped in the sudden blockade, could only wait in frustrated anticipation.

In no time, a patrol car made its way through the congestion.

โ€œChief Brennan! This is the car! The driver went berserk, drove into a no-entry zone and ignored all attempts to stop himโ€ฆโ€

Before the officer could finish, Chief Brennan cut him off. โ€œEnough! Do you have any idea whoโ€™s in that car?โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter who it is, everyone must follow the law!โ€

โ€œFollow the law? Did they break it, really? They just took a wrong turn, no harm done. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?โ€ Chief Brennan, red-faced and fuming, pushed past the officers and approached the car.

As the window began to lower, he found himself face to face with Preston. Remembering made Chief Brennanโ€™s heart pound; he had a clear memory of the drama at the police station recently, when Preston stepped in to handle a sensitive issue involving some female inmates.

โ€œCan we go now?โ€ Prestonโ€™s voice was calm, almost casual.

โ€œOfโ€ฆ of course, you canโ€ฆโ€ stammered Chief Brennan.

As Preston rolled up the window, Chief Brennan hastily cleared the way, allowing Preston to drive off unimpeded.

โ€œChief Brennan! How can you just let them go like that?โ€

โ€œWhat else do you want? Oneโ€™s Ms. Dawson, and the other, the internationally feared Preston. You wanna mess with them? They didnโ€™t hit and run. Why are you so eager to catch them? Is our police force just here to chase after drivers who take a wrong turn?โ€

Chief Brennan didnโ€™t want to dwell on the matter any longer. โ€œGet your men back in order. Next time you see this car, steer clear!โ€ With that, he returned to his car, realizing his back was soaked with sweat.

The power Preston wielded was a clear sign that Echo City was on the brink of change.

Meanwhile, Freya couldnโ€™t believe the police would yield to Prestonโ€™s influence. โ€œPreston, do you have any idea what youโ€™ve done?โ€

โ€œFirst time in Echo City, I had to make a memorable entrance.โ€ Preston raised an eyebrow. โ€œDoesnโ€™t Ms. Dawson understand?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re stirring up trouble to make a statement in Echo City?โ€

โ€œIt seems Ms. Dawson is smarter than I thought, pretending not to know all day.โ€

Preston continued, his eyes carrying a hint of menace, though his smile remained. โ€œWhile you deny involvement in the Southern Suburb affair, you wonโ€™t stop investigating. If I find out youโ€™ve lied to meโ€ฆโ€

The threat was clear, and under the cover of night, Freya felt an undeniable fear of the man before her. Preston was indeed a formidable figure.

โ€œMs. Dawson, weโ€™re here.โ€

Preston gestured for Freya to exit the car. Somehow, they had stopped without her noticing.

Anxious to get out, Freya scrambled with her seatbelt, forgetting to unfasten it. With a simple push of a button, Preston unfastened her seatbelt, his voice soft but stern, โ€œDonโ€™t let me down in tomorrowโ€™s exam.โ€
