Chapter 366
โReally now?โ Prestonโs voice was a mix of challenge and amusement.
โAre you insane? If youโre on a suicide mission, leave me out of it!โ
Freya tried to yank the car door open, but it was locked from the outside. Outside, a traffic cop, who had been ready to forcefully open the door, paused mid-motion as he answered a call on his phone. The surrounding cars, trapped in the sudden blockade, could only wait in frustrated anticipation.
In no time, a patrol car made its way through the congestion.
โChief Brennan! This is the car! The driver went berserk, drove into a no-entry zone and ignored all attempts to stop himโฆโ
Before the officer could finish, Chief Brennan cut him off. โEnough! Do you have any idea whoโs in that car?โ
โDoesnโt matter who it is, everyone must follow the law!โ
โFollow the law? Did they break it, really? They just took a wrong turn, no harm done. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?โ Chief Brennan, red-faced and fuming, pushed past the officers and approached the car.
As the window began to lower, he found himself face to face with Preston. Remembering made Chief Brennanโs heart pound; he had a clear memory of the drama at the police station recently, when Preston stepped in to handle a sensitive issue involving some female inmates.
โCan we go now?โ Prestonโs voice was calm, almost casual.
โOfโฆ of course, you canโฆโ stammered Chief Brennan.
As Preston rolled up the window, Chief Brennan hastily cleared the way, allowing Preston to drive off unimpeded.
โChief Brennan! How can you just let them go like that?โ
โWhat else do you want? Oneโs Ms. Dawson, and the other, the internationally feared Preston. You wanna mess with them? They didnโt hit and run. Why are you so eager to catch them? Is our police force just here to chase after drivers who take a wrong turn?โ
Chief Brennan didnโt want to dwell on the matter any longer. โGet your men back in order. Next time you see this car, steer clear!โ With that, he returned to his car, realizing his back was soaked with sweat.
The power Preston wielded was a clear sign that Echo City was on the brink of change.
Meanwhile, Freya couldnโt believe the police would yield to Prestonโs influence. โPreston, do you have any idea what youโve done?โ
โFirst time in Echo City, I had to make a memorable entrance.โ Preston raised an eyebrow. โDoesnโt Ms. Dawson understand?โ
โYouโre stirring up trouble to make a statement in Echo City?โ
โIt seems Ms. Dawson is smarter than I thought, pretending not to know all day.โ
Preston continued, his eyes carrying a hint of menace, though his smile remained. โWhile you deny involvement in the Southern Suburb affair, you wonโt stop investigating. If I find out youโve lied to meโฆโ
The threat was clear, and under the cover of night, Freya felt an undeniable fear of the man before her. Preston was indeed a formidable figure.
โMs. Dawson, weโre here.โ
Preston gestured for Freya to exit the car. Somehow, they had stopped without her noticing.
Anxious to get out, Freya scrambled with her seatbelt, forgetting to unfasten it. With a simple push of a button, Preston unfastened her seatbelt, his voice soft but stern, โDonโt let me down in tomorrowโs exam.โ
