The Amazing Son-in-Law: Chapters 436-440
Chapter 436
Early the next morning, Anthony picked up Charlie Wade to attend the Chinese Medicine Expo. Charlie didn't expect the expo to be held at the Aurouss Hill Exhibition and Convention Center, owned by the Grant family. He remembered Jason's arrogance during his last visit. Now, Jason and his father, Justin, were gone, leaving no trace. This evoked the line, "Her face is gone now, whereabouts unknown; yet peach-bloom light beams on a spring wind's flow."
As soon as Charlie entered the center, he noticed missing person posters for Jason and Justin on the walls. The Grant family had offered a thirty-million-dollar reward, but to no avail. These efforts were futile.
Inside the hall, Charlie and Anthony saw Graham and Aurora. The Quintons, involved in the medicinal herb business, were exhibitors and had arrived early to prepare.
Graham excitedly greeted Charlie, bowing and saying, "Mr. Wade, you're here!" Aurora, looking haggard, approached shyly, bowing and greeting him. Charlie noticed her distress and, sensing she didn't want to talk, simply said, "Aurora, you don't look well. You should rest more." Aurora blushed, touched by his concern.
Graham then professionally asked, "Mr. Wade, are you here for the three-hundred-year-old purple ginseng?" Charlie nodded and inquired about details. Graham explained that a Northeast company had purchased it for five million dollars, a reasonable price given purple ginseng's value. Charlie nodded in agreement.
High-quality purple ginseng, like Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) and Cordyceps sinensis, had limited use when consumed directly. While strengthening, it couldn't cure diseases. Its full potential depended on the prescription and the preparer's skill. The prescription was paramount; the same ten herbs could cure or kill. Proportions were critical, with minor differences drastically altering the outcome. Beyond the prescription, skillful preparation was essential; a skilled preparer could elevate even average medicine. A master could transform excellent medicine into a miracle cure. Charlie was such a master, capable of creating extraordinary remedies with his unique prescriptions. The purple ginseng would be invaluable to him.
Chapter 437
Charlie heard familiar voices. Jeffrey from the Weaver family exclaimed, "Chairman Wilson, don't worry. With the three-hundred-year-old purple ginseng, we'll complete our new prescription and cure your illness!"
Kenneth from the Eastcliff Wilson family replied, "Thank you, Brother Jeffrey! My family will support the Weaver family." Jeffrey rejoiced.
Turning, Charlie saw Jeffrey, Kenneth, and Wendy. Wendy, no longer ashamed, carried a Hermes bag and clung to Jeffrey's arm, looking like an upper-class socialite. A man accompanying them was Liam, Jeffrey's ostracized half-brother.
Kenneth, Jeffrey, and Wendy, harboring deep resentment, were filled with anger upon seeing Charlie. Jeffrey's disgust at the memory of licking a urinal resurfaced. Wendy also felt nauseous, remembering the incident.
Kenneth, the most powerful of the three, ground his teeth and said, "It's you, you piece of garbage!"
Charlie smirked, "Last time, you called me 'father' and 'grandfather.' A rather unfilial grandson, wouldn't you say?"
Kenneth's fists clenched. He knew he couldn't beat Charlie and sneered, "A smart man doesn't suffer immediate losses."
Charlie sneered back, "You can bend but not extend, right? Reclaimed your manhood?"
Chapter 438
Kenneth fumed at Charlie's words about bending but not extending. "Don't be arrogant!" he cursed. "I'll restore my manhood, and then I won't spare you!"
Anthony reprimanded Kenneth, "Kenneth! I've warned you repeatedly not to disrespect Mr. Wade! If you offend him again, don't blame me."
Kenneth was enraged by Anthony's defense of Charlie. His mother had urged him to reconcile with Anthony and invite him to her 84th birthday celebration. He couldn't understand Anthony's deference to Charlie. He could only angrily say, "Uncle Simmons, keep your eyes open!"
Jeffrey sneered, "This liar can only survive in Aurouss Hill, cheating people. It's only a matter of time before he's exposed!"
Charlie smiled, "The Remarkable Club's toilet wasn't big enough? Your mouth still stinks. The Aurouss Hill Exhibition Center has twenty or thirty urinals. Want to try them?"
Jeffrey's face turned hideous; he stammered, "Youyoucan't just ridicule me in Aurouss Hill!"
Graham, witnessing the scene, stepped in, "Jeffrey, who do you think you are? Who gave you the right to speak to Mr. Wade like that?"
Jeffrey contemptuously replied, "Graham, our families have worked together for over ten years. Why are you defending this trash?"
Graham retorted, "Mr. Wade's abilities are beyond your comprehension. Disrespecting him is disrespecting the Quintons. We'll cut all ties and stop supplying medicinal herbs to the Weavers!"
Jeffrey's expression changed. He didn't want to lose face or the Quinton's herbs. He coldly responded, "The Weavers will prosper without you. But your future won't be bright without us."
Graham remained calm, "The Quintons are widely known. Losing your collaboration won't affect us. But you'll struggle without our herbs."
Liam, the middle-aged man, tried to apologize, but Jeffrey kicked him, shouting, "Liam! Shut up! You're nothing but a bastard!"
Chapter 439
Liam fell, clutching his stomach. He remained silent. Charlie saw a reflection of his former self in Liam – disliked, overlooked, and humiliated, yet quietly biding his time.
Wendy urged Jeffrey, "My dear, don't get worked up over trash. Let's go to the expo." Jeffrey agreed. He considered Charlie trash and Liam a bastard, still waiting for revenge. Charlie wasn't bothered by them; he was focused on the purple ginseng.
After they left, Anthony sighed, "Kenneth is arrogant." Graham agreed, suggesting they move on. Charlie said, "Don't worry, I won't be affected by clowns."
They entered the hall, which was filled with various medicinal herbs. Graham invited Charlie to his booth, showcasing a wide array of products. He offered Charlie any herbs he needed. Charlie said he'd let him know after acquiring the ginseng.
Charlie continued browsing, dissatisfied with the average quality of the herbs. It was almost time for the auction.
Chapter 440
They headed to the auction hall, a large space with a glass booth displaying the three-hundred-year-old purple ginseng. Charlie was thrilled; it was even older and better than expected.
The hall was packed with people from the Chinese medicine field, including renowned doctors. Many greeted Anthony, celebrating his success in curing paraplegia. Anthony felt embarrassed, knowing Charlie was responsible.
People asked about the cure's secret. Anthony said he'd obtained a miraculous medicine. People urged him to release the prescription, even mentioning a Nobel Prize. Anthony refused, citing secrecy.
Ichiro Kobayashi, chairman of Kobayashi Pharma, approached, wanting to buy the prescription. He boasted about Kobayashi Pharma's power, wanting to sell the medicine worldwide.
Anthony pointed out that Kobayashi Pharma's "Japanese" medicines were actually plagiarized Chinese prescriptions. Ichiro arrogantly insisted they were developed by Kobayashi Pharma, based on Japanese traditional medicine. This angered Anthony, as it was a common tactic of Japanese and Korean companies, who often didn't acknowledge the original Chinese source.
