The Amazing Son in Law
Chapter 536
Jasmine asked her grandfather, "Grandpa, should we bring a gift?"
Lord Moore replied, "Someone gave me a piece of cold jade years ago. It calms the mind. Give it to Donald for his son. A small effect is better than none."
Jasmine nodded. "Okay, Grandpa. I understand."
Lord Moore stood up. "Jasmine, come with me."
"Okay, Grandpa." Jasmine followed him into his study.
In his study, Lord Moore sat and asked, "Jasmine, have you made any progress with Mr. Wade recently?"
Jasmine blushed. "Grandpa, I… I… that…"
Lord Moore smiled at her flustered reaction. "Young girl, why so shy? Tell me!"
Embarrassed, Jasmine replied, "Grandpa, Mr. Wade's been very busy. We rarely see each other…"
Lord Moore was disappointed. "Jasmine, you can't be nonchalant! I'm getting older! You can wait, but I can't wait years more…"
He continued, "I'm not asking you to be unethical. I'm not forcing you. I know you truly like Mr. Wade. Am I right?"
Jasmine nodded, her face flushing. She had grown even more fond of Charlie Wade. She was a strong woman who loved strong men. His strength was very attractive to her.
Her attraction to Charlie Wade was inevitable.
Lord Moore sighed. "The pity is he married so young. But in modern society, second or third marriages are common. Don't worry about his past marriage. Keep a good man. Even ten previous marriages wouldn't matter if he stays with you."
Jasmine nodded. "Grandpa, I understand. I can't be too forward; he might dislike me. I heard he's very loving to his wife."
"Yes," Lord Moore agreed. "Fight steadily, win him over secretly."
Lord Moore suddenly remembered something. "My eightieth birthday is in a few days. Invite Mr. Wade to the banquet. Use the opportunity to get closer."
"Yes, Grandpa," Jasmine replied.
"Good," Lord Moore said. "It's late. Go to Castle Peak Psychiatric Hospital to visit the Webb family's junior."
Chapter 537
Reuben drove Jasmine to Castle Peak Psychiatric Hospital.
Nurses had just finished feeding the increasingly erratic Kian. After feeding, mouth wiping, rinsing, and gastric lavage, Kian lay on the bed, hands and feet tied, with a satisfied expression. The nurses carried a basin of stomach contents to the family resting room, fighting back nausea.
Kian's father, Donald, and brother, Sean, sat on the sofa, expressionless.
A nurse greeted them. "Mr. Webb, Junior Mr. Webb, the patient is conscious."
Donald asked coldly, "Gastric lavage complete?"
The nurse nodded. "Yes."
"Okay," Donald asked. "The food—was it disinfected?"
"Sterilized," the nurse replied. "Pressure cooker, high temperature and pressure. The smell remains, but no bacteria or viruses…"
Kian's hourly "supplement" routine continued. Donald dared not stop it; delaying even a minute risked his son's life. He'd discussed it with medical experts; a temporary solution was pre-sterilizing the supplements in a pressure cooker for at least half an hour.
Donald waved the nurses away. "Prepare his next meals in advance."
"Mr. Webb, eight meals are prepared and sterilized. They'll be served at room temperature," the nurse said.
Donald felt nauseous. "You can leave."
Once they were alone, Sean whispered, "Dad, can this continue? Kian eating… that, every hour?! This will ruin the Webb family's reputation!"
Donald asked, "What else can we do? Watch your brother die?"
"No, Dad," Sean said. "Take Kian back to Sudbury. Use our family doctor and nurses. At least they'll be discreet."
Donald considered. "Okay. We'll send Kian back to Sudbury, but we won't leave Aurouss Hill yet."
"Why?" Sean asked, surprised.
"I suspect this isn't an accident. Something caused this. We need to investigate here. Stay with me."
"Yes, Dad," Sean said. "I'll stay."
"We'll arrange for our doctor to accompany Kian to Sudbury tomorrow," Donald said. He stood. "Let's see your brother."
The strong stench hit them as they entered the intensive care unit, despite open windows and an exhaust fan.
Chapter 538
Kian lay in bed, tears in his eyes, silently looking out the window. The stench disgusted him.
"Kian." Donald saw his son's despair.
Kian stared out the window. "Dad, let me die. I can't bear this…"
Donald held his son's hand. "Son, it's better to live than die!"
Kian sobbed. "But who has a more miserable life? I'd rather be dead…"
Donald felt upset. "Kian, don't worry. I'll cure you, I promise!"
Kian turned to his father. "Dad, do you mean it?"
The stench hit Donald. His eyes reddened, tears falling. He fought back nausea and nodded. "Yes! Don't worry!"
"I'll arrange transport back to Sudbury tomorrow. I'll stay here to find the culprit and a cure for you. Take care. Wait for my good news!"
Kian nodded, hopeful.
Sean sighed. "Kian, don't worry. I'll avenge you!"
Kian nodded. "Thank you, brother!"
A nurse knocked. "Mr. Webb, a Mr. Moore and Miss Moore are here."
"Moore?" Donald realized. "The Moore family. Invite them in, but wait in the waiting room, not the ward."
Sean asked, "Dad, the Moore family?"
"Yes," Donald replied. "We haven't visited them. They likely heard about our situation."
Sean thought of Jasmine. He last saw her three or four years ago; she was already beautiful then. He'd considered pursuing her; she was beautiful, educated, capable, and from a wealthy, powerful family. He'd been too busy to pursue her after returning to the country. The thought of seeing her again excited him.
Chapter 539
The nurse brought Reuben and Jasmine into the waiting room. Sean immediately recognized Jasmine. Donald was also surprised; she was even more beautiful than he remembered.
Reuben spoke respectfully. "Uncle Webb, I'm Reuben Moore, and this is my cousin, Jasmine. My grandfather heard you were in Aurouss Hill and wanted us to visit. My father couldn't come, please forgive us."
Donald replied, "Lord Moore is too polite. I should have visited, but…"
Despite the power difference, both families were influential. Normally, Donald would have visited the Moores first. He felt embarrassed about his son's situation.
"I came because my youngest son, Kian, is ill. I stayed at the hospital. I apologize for not visiting Lord Moore earlier."
Jasmine replied, "Uncle Webb, you don't need to apologize. Grandpa understands." She gave Donald a piece of jade. "My grandfather asked me to give this to you. It calms the mind and may help your son."
Donald thanked them.
Sean, regaining his composure, said, "Jasmine, it's been a long time."
Jasmine smiled. "Three or four years, I think."
Sean smiled. "Time flies! You've changed a lot. We should keep in touch!"
Jasmine laughed. "Yes, we've all changed."
Donald noticed Sean's interest in Jasmine. He saw potential in a marriage alliance. Few wealthy families had daughters as attractive and well-behaved as Jasmine. A union would strengthen both families.
Donald asked, "Jasmine, are you married?"
Jasmine replied quickly, "Uncle Webb, you're joking. If I were married, Grandpa would have told you."
Donald smiled. "Do you have a boyfriend?"
Sean looked at Jasmine anxiously.
Jasmine thought of Charlie Wade. If only he wasn't married…
She sighed and replied, "Uncle Webb, I don't have a boyfriend."
Donald and Sean were relieved.
Donald said, "Please send my regards to Lord Moore. We're sending Kian home tomorrow. Sean and I will stay to investigate. We'll visit your grandfather tomorrow."
Jasmine agreed.
Chapter 540
Donald planned to have Sean stay at the Moore mansion for a few days, creating an opportunity for him and Jasmine. He hoped to discuss a marriage between the families with Lord Moore. The Webb family was powerful, Sean was the heir, a desirable match. He believed Lord Moore wouldn't refuse. Donald longed for grandchildren. He'd not found a suitable woman for Sean until Jasmine.
Unbeknownst to him, Jasmine’s heart belonged to Charlie Wade, the very man who had caused his son's plight.
