Chapter 851

The driver departed in the Rolls-Royce Phantom, while Charlie Wade took the wheel of the elder's BMW 5 Series. The car pulled up before the three, and the elder quickly opened the rear door. "Matilda, please," he gestured to her politely.

Matilda nodded and smiled, entering the vehicle. Paul then moved to sit beside his mother, but Jacob Wilson intervened. "Paul, you and Charlie are both young men. You'll have plenty to talk about. Chat with him during the drive!"

Without waiting for Paul's reply, Jacob opened the other rear door and settled in. Paul reluctantly took the passenger seat.

As Charlie drove towards the city, Jacob, slightly embarrassed, addressed Matilda. "Matilda, this car is rather modest; I hope you don't mind."

Matilda sighed. "Jacob, I've told you, I don't care about such things. Please don't mention it again."

"Yes, yes," Jacob agreed, launching into a compliment. "I don't mean to imply you care, but this car doesn't suit your elegance. You look like someone in their fifties, yet you're younger than forty! A woman of your refinement should be in a Rolls-Royce."

Matilda's cheeks flushed slightly. Smiling, she said, "After all these years, you still have a way with words."

"Everything I say comes from the heart," Jacob replied, smiling.

Matilda nodded and asked, "How have you been all these years?"

Jacob sighed, a hint of anger in his voice. "Honestly, since graduating from university, I haven't been happy."

"Are you and Elaine unhappy?" Matilda inquired softly.

Jacob offered a wry smile. "Happy? We haven't known happiness in over twenty years."

Matilda's beautiful eyes reflected distress and regret at Jacob's wry smile and unspoken pain. She recalled a pivotal moment from the eve of her college graduation. Her roommate had rushed back, crying, revealing that her boyfriend had taken advantage of her while intoxicated.

The news was devastating. Matilda's future plansโ€”overseas studies with her boyfriend, building their careers, serving their countryโ€”crumbled. Her roommate tearfully apologized, claiming her boyfriend's intoxication and pleading for secrecy. But Matilda couldn't ignore it. Her boyfriend's betrayal was unacceptable, given her unwavering belief in the primacy of feelings over material interests. She ended the relationship and left Aurouss Hill and China heartbroken. Later, she was further devastated to learn of her ex-boyfriend's marriage to her former roommate.

Chapter 852

An American boy pursued her intensely, and in her anger and desire to move on, Matilda accepted his proposal. They married quickly, had children, and he treated her well throughout their lives. Yet, over two decades passed, and she never forgot her ex-boyfriend. Reflecting on the past, she realized her roommate hadn't sought forgiveness; she had manipulated her into leaving, securing the ex-boyfriend for herself. Matilda, young and idealistic, had been outmaneuvered.

Jacob's lingering emotions caused Matilda significant pain in her marriage. Though her husband loved and cared for her, she never loved him. Their loveless marriage lasted over twenty years, ending with his death from cancer. Matilda cared for him devotedly until his burial.

Afterwards, she felt an emptiness, recognizing that she had fulfilled all her wifely dutiesโ€”virtuous, loyal, caring, and dedicatedโ€”but she now needed to live for herself. She decided to return home, hoping to see Jacob Wilson, the man she'd impulsively left behind for Elaine Ma. She was shocked by Jacob's confession of unhappiness over the past two decades. Though her own marriage lacked love, at least her husband had been kind.

Jacob was also melancholic, regretting his actions that night and the subsequent lack of love and happiness with Elaine. He had been consumed by thoughts of Matilda for over twenty years, and seeing her again ignited his regret.

He should have spent his life with this perfect, humble, intelligent, and understanding woman. Instead, he ended up with Elaine Ma. Jacob felt he had missed out on everything.

Chapter 853

Jacob's eyes welled with tears. Even Charlie Wade recognized Matilda's superiority over Elaine Ma, a comparison that amplified Jacob's regret. Matilda, too, felt regret for her impulsive decision, for their shared unhappiness and lack of love. Why had they separated? She suspected Elaine Ma's manipulation, yet her youthful arrogance had been her downfall. Their two decades were filled with unhappiness.

Silently, Matilda offered Jacob a tissue. Seeing her own tears, Jacob wondered if she still harbored feelings for him. His excitement was tempered by concern over Elaine Ma's whereabouts and potential return. He longed to pursue Matilda wholeheartedly but feared Elaine's reaction.

Elaine Ma was far inferiorโ€”a shadow compared to Matilda's beauty, temperament, education, wealth, and refinement.

Chapter 854

Jacob prayed for Elaine Ma's absence, hoping for a chance at a renewed relationship with Matilda. He believed his daughter, Claire, would be understanding, and he was confident Matilda's son, Paul, would accept him. His only concern was Elaine Ma's return. Unknown to him, his son-in-law, Charlie Wade, held the key.

Arriving at the Shangri-La, Charlie greeted his father-in-law and Matilda. "Shangri-La is Aurouss Hill's finest hotel, with excellent local cuisine. I've reserved a private room. I hope it suits your tastes."

Matilda replied, "Charlie, you're too kind. I have no preferences; after so many years, I'm eager to experience Aurouss Hill's flavors again."

Charlie smiled. "Then you've chosen the right place." He turned to Paul. "Mr. Paul, what are your thoughts on Chinese food?"

Paul replied, "Mr. Wade, I'm half-Chinese. I prefer Chinese cuisine over American fast food or Western food." He added, "My mother is an exceptional cook, the best I've ever known."

Charlie exclaimed, "Aunt Matilda is beautiful, elegant, and a wonderful cook!"

Matilda modestly replied, "Don't listen to Paul's exaggerations."

Jacob sighed. "In school, you always promised to cook for me, but we never had the chance. After twenty years, I've yet to taste your cookingโ€ฆ"

Matilda smiled. "If I have time, I can cook for you. But my cooking might not be as good as Paul says. Don't blame me if you're disappointed."

Jacob's excitement was evident. "Really? When?" He eagerly suggested a dinner at his house. Matilda expressed concern about meeting Elaine Ma.

Jacob assured her that Elaine was away, the duration uncertain. He proposed having lunch at Shangri-La, then Matilda could rest before cooking at his home that afternoon, allowing him to introduce his daughter.

Chapter 855

Jacob's urgency stemmed from a fear of Elaine Ma's unexpected return. He wouldn't dare invite Matilda home while Elaine was present.

Matilda reflected on the past, recalling her limited opportunities to cook for Jacob during their college years due to the constraints of dorm life and societal norms. Their early romantic encounters often took place in secluded, clandestine locations, typical for young couples of that era.

Charlie Wade noticed Matilda's blush, puzzled by her sudden shyness. He also observed Jacob's reddened face.
