Chapter 996

The sentence stunned everyone present: "An annual salary of two million dollars?!" It sounded like robbing a bank. Could Charlie Wade really have orchestrated this? Could Caleb’s salary reach two million with a single phone call?

The caller chuckled on the other end, saying, "Chairman Lane made the decision. He has his reasons, and I believe the price isn't high in his view." He continued, "Mr. Morales, we'll see you next week. This is my mobile number; call me when you arrive." Then, he hung up.

Caleb stared at his phone, completely bewildered. Harry, consumed by envy, jealousy, and hatred, blurted out, "Caleb, does your company really pay you two million a year?"

Caleb, snapping back to reality, nodded blankly, "The personnel director called and said so."

Harry's jealousy raged. He never imagined Charlie Wade possessed such influence. He regretted kowtowing to Jeff instead of Charlie Wade!

Caleb, tears welling, looked at Charlie Wade with red eyes and choked, "Charlie, you've done so much for me. How can I be Chairman Lane's assistant?"

Charlie Wade smiled indifferently, patted his shoulder, and said seriously, "You're my brother. I can easily arrange an assistant position for you."

Caleb, though moved, lacked confidence. "Charlie, I know you consider me a brother, but honestly, I'm not sure I'm worth two million a year."

Charlie Wade smiled, "Whether you're worth it isn't your decision. As my brother, two million is your starting salary." He added seriously, "Stick with Travis Lane and show those who look down on you that you've changed!"

Caleb was overcome with emotion. Since leaving the orphanage, he'd been looked down upon for his youth and lack of parents. He'd faced bullying at construction sites and disdain in Lancaster. Even his girlfriend left him. Charlie Wade's words ignited his self-esteem.

He clasped his fists, deeply grateful. "Brother, I can't thank you enough. My life is yours from now on!"

Charlie Wade waved his hand, smiling. "Why would I want your life? Live well, live your life—that's all I ask." He paused. "I only have one request."

Caleb eagerly replied, "Anything!"

Charlie Wade said sternly, "After becoming Travis Lane's assistant, refuse any attempts by your ex-girlfriend and her mother to reconcile, even if you still love her. Such a shallow woman isn't worthy of my brother!"

Chapter 997

Caleb realized his life had changed dramatically. He was no longer the downtrodden nobody. He was Charlie Wade's brother and Lane Group's chairman's assistant, earning two million dollars annually. His ex-girlfriend and her mother would likely beg for reconciliation if they knew. But Charlie was right; they weren't worthy of him anymore.

This wasn't arrogance; Caleb knew he owed his good fortune to Charlie Wade and couldn't let him down. Those at the dinner table looked upon Charlie Wade as a god. He'd donated a million to the orphanage, his friends matching the donation. He'd also secured Caleb a two-million-dollar job with Travis Lane, exceeding everyone's expectations.

Claire Wilson didn't find it surprising. She knew Charlie Wade had connections with the wealthy. Others, however, were intrigued and began vying for Charlie's attention, hoping for similar opportunities. They raised their glasses to toast him.

But then, Claire received a call from Elaine Ma, Charlie's mother-in-law. Elaine wailed, "My dear daughter, come home! Your father's divorcing me! I'm dying!"

Claire panicked. She told Charlie, "My parents are fighting; let's go home."

Charlie agreed. He raised his glass. "My apologies, everyone. A family emergency. We must leave. Let's get together again soon!"

Mrs. Lewis urged them to go. Those hoping to leverage Charlie's connections were disappointed. Some pleaded for a quick toast, but Charlie declined. He finished his wine and left with Claire, who drove.

On the way home, Claire worried, "I think Dad's tempted by Matilda again. Help me convince him to change his mind."

Charlie replied, "If Dad lacks feelings for Mom, forcing them together would be torture."

Claire sighed, "So, short-term pain is better than long-term pain?"

Chapter 998

Charlie smiled, "You know your mother-in-law. She'll make short-term pain into a long-term ordeal. Even if Dad wants a divorce, it won't be easy."

Claire was enlightened. Her mother's suicide threat was probably an act. Relief washed over her.

As their BMW pulled into the villa, they heard Elaine Ma cursing, "Jacob Wilson, you despicable bastard! After all I've done for you, you want a divorce?!"

Entering the house, they found Elaine cursing relentlessly, her missing front teeth making her speech slurred and spittle-flecked. Jacob kept a safe distance, saying angrily, "Enough! I'm done with you! Divorce is the only option!"

Elaine screamed, "You're dreaming! I won't divorce you until I die!"

Jacob threatened, "I'll sue tomorrow."

Elaine retorted triumphantly, "You think you can get a divorce easily? I've checked the laws. As long as I disagree, the court can't force a divorce!"

Jacob argued, "We have no emotional foundation!"

Elaine smugly replied, "Even without emotional foundation, you need two years of separation before a divorce can be granted!"

Jacob was stunned. He exclaimed, "Then I'll separate from you now! Two years from today, you leave!"

Elaine said, "Living in the same house, sleeping in separate rooms, isn't separation. You need to move out of Thompson First Villa!" She added, "You can move back to the old house!"

Jacob was torn. He wanted to leave Elaine, but hated leaving the luxurious Thompson First Villa. He'd only lived there a few days!

Claire sighed helplessly, "Mom, Dad! Why the fighting again?!"

Elaine said, "I want a good life, but your dad doesn't!"

Jacob blurted, "I'm done with you!"

Charlie knew Jacob wanted Matilda but his plan was flawed.

Chapter 999

Elaine angrily said, "Fine, you can't live with me? Then live with me for two years, then sue for divorce. But if you're better off than me after the divorce, I will make you pay!" She threatened, "I'll be your ghost, your shadow—you can't escape me!"

Jacob was terrified. If he was with Matilda, Elaine would harass them both relentlessly. He asked himself, "Will I never be with Matilda? Will I never find happiness?" Despair washed over him.

Elaine said triumphantly, "You'll never get rid of me unless I die! Even in death, I'll haunt you!"

Jacob trembled with rage. "Elaine Ma, you beast! How can such a person exist?!"

Elaine retorted, "What's wrong with me? I married you, had children with you. Do you think I'm someone you can discard whenever you want?"

Jacob, choked with emotion, said, "Marrying you is my biggest regret! Even if a knife was at my throat, I wouldn't marry you!"

Elaine sneered, "Oh, you regret marrying me? Don't you regret not being with Matilda? You had your cake and wanted to eat it too. Now you blame me for being a shrew?"

Jacob was speechless. Elaine always found the most hurtful words. He realized he couldn't win. He cried, a heartbreaking, desperate cry.

Elaine, adopting a victorious stance, sneered, "Jacob Wilson, you're trying to win sympathy. Should I tell my daughter about your affairs with Matilda?"

Chapter 1000

Jacob's cries grew louder. He realized he'd never win against Elaine, nor find happiness.

Claire was disheartened. She realized her parents' constant fighting made everyone unhappy. She received a WeChat message from Loreen, who'd heard the shouting and asked if she should come over. Claire replied she was already home. Loreen decided to stay at the hotel to avoid the drama.

Claire felt bad for Loreen. She had envisioned a warm stay for her friend, but her family’s chaos made her stay undesirable. Loreen also envied Claire's relationship with Charlie, but not anymore; she saw how unstable Claire's family was.

Elaine, seeing Jacob retreat to his room, ceased her tirade. "I'm going for a luxurious bath in my big bathtub. I am living in Thompson First! Hahaha!"

Claire, exhausted and frustrated, told Charlie, "I'm going for a bath. I'm about to collapse." Charlie, anticipating intimacy, eagerly followed.
