The Amazing Son-in-Law: Chapters 1266-1270
Chapter 1266
Charlie Wade glanced at him contemptuously and said disdainfully, "You can call me Young Master Wade."
David Carson was surprised. "These days, people still claim to be 'Young Masters'?" he thought. "Could it be one of those wealthy young masters?" He was excited. "Oh, hello, Master Wade! I'm in the flour business here, with a mill in Aurouss Hill. Perhaps you've eaten our flourโAristocratic Family brand."
Charlie Wade frowned. "Aristocratic Family? Isn't that a TV show name?"
David Carson said embarrassedly, "We wanted to get some publicity. We're flour, not gold, but it's not bad!"
Charlie Wade snorted coldly. "Boss Carson, it's your daughter-in-law's wedding. Why wasn't there a wedding procession to pick her up?"
David Carson and his wife exchanged embarrassed glances. After a moment, David stammered, "Young Master Wade, we'd arranged a team, butโฆ something happened."
"An accident?" Charlie Wade frowned. "Even with an accident, you don't have a car?"
David looked apologetic. "I'm so sorry, Young Master Wade. I was a mess. I neglected Isabella. I'm so sorry!" He quickly added, "Don't worry, Master Wade. We'll compensate her!"
Steve, overhearing this, was overjoyed. His parents had opposed his marriage to Isabella, even threatening her. Now, seeing Claire and Charlie arrive in luxury cars, their attitude had completely changed! He felt grateful to them.
Suddenly, Steve's mother, Leann, pulled David aside and whispered, "What nonsense are you talking? We said we'd never let that woman in!"
David whispered back, "Didn't you see Isabella has influential friends? If we slight themโฆ"
"Slight them!" Leann hissed. "That Wade kid can't give us a penny! Even if Steve marries Isabella, the Wades won't help us, so why are we giving him face? We're only letting Isabella marry because she knows him?"
David asked, "So, do we continue the wedding?"
"Of course not!" Leann snapped. "The Starks are fools to let Isabella marry into this! It's a disaster!" She added, "You keep quiet. I won't let Isabella enter our house today!"
Chapter 1267
Leann was a self-serving egoist. She only considered her own benefit. If something benefited her, she'd be friendly; otherwise, she wouldn't bother. Even Charlie and Claire's expensive cars didn't change her opinion of Isabella. "Face is meaningless," she thought. "Only real benefits matter. Can Isabella's friends give me money? Help my business? Improve our social standing? If so, I'll be nice. But if not, she's not coming into my house!"
The lavish wedding was a ruseโto avoid directly opposing the marriage and alienating her son. She'd find fault and force Isabella to quit. Her current excuse: Isabella's parents weren't there.
Approaching Isabella, Leann coldly asked, "Where are your parents? Why didn't they come?"
Isabella hesitated. She knew their absence was problematic.
Seeing Isabella's silence, Leann sneered, "Oh, Isabella, you think you're too good for us? You ignore your future mother-in-law?"
Isabella explained, "Auntie, my parentsโฆ are upset, so they couldn't be here. Please forgive them."
"Oh, really?" Leann scoffed. "You look down on us? Your parents don't even show up for the wedding? What will people think of the Carsons?"
Isabella's eyes welled up. "I'm sorry, Auntie. They're upset about the bride priceโฆthey weren't happy when I left this morning."
"Unhappy?" Leann's eyebrows furrowed. "Unbelievable! What are your family's circumstances? Ours are far superior! They're unhappy she's marrying into our family? If they don't like us, then stop this wedding!"
Chapter 1268
Isabella's tears flowed. Steve, distressed, pleaded, "Mom! Isabella and I will be happy. Don't worry about this. Let's just get on with the wedding."
"No!" Leann glared at Isabella. "Since I married your father, I've never suffered such an insult! They think they're better than us? We waited, our friends waited, but their family didn't even come except for the bride! They're insulting us!"
Isabella insisted, "Auntie, you're wrong. They didn't mean to insult you, they were just angry."
Leann coldly declared, "Enough! This is a major event. You're not an orphan. How can you get married without your parents? It's bad luck!" She gritted her teeth. "Isabella, if your parents don't come, this wedding is off!"
Isabella felt devastated. She'd overcome her parents' objections with Claire and Charlie's help, only to face new obstacles from Steve's family.
Claire, witnessing this, angrily said, "Auntie, do you know how much Isabella has suffered for this engagement?"
Leann looked at Claire. "I don't know you, so I won't offend you, but this isn't right. We invited relatives and friends, but the bride's family sent no one! Have you ever seen anything like this?"
Claire explained, "It's a special situation. Isabella's parents disagree, but she's determined to marry Steve."
Leann scoffed, "We can't afford this. The bride's parents must be present. Otherwise, the wedding is off."
Claire protested, "That's not fair!"
Charlie stopped Claire, smiling at Leann, "Let's be straightforward. Why won't you proceed without Isabella's parents?"
Leann smiled. "It's simple. We're looking for a daughter-in-law, but Isabella and her family are poor. I can tolerate it for my son's happiness, but they insult us! If Isabella wants to marry into our family, she needs a 10 million dowry, otherwise, it's off."
Isabella was furious. Leann was blaming her family for everything! "Auntie Leann, if you didn't want me, I wouldn't beg you, but you promised Steve and me a wedding. Why are you obstructing this in every way?"
Chapter 1269
Leann didn't want her son to marry Isabella. This wedding was a calculated move to cleanly reject her. She would make Isabella's family look bad, allowing her to refuse the marriage from a position of moral high ground. This is a common tactic among shrewd parentsโavoid direct confrontation to avoid future resentment from their children.
Now on moral high ground, even Steve's objections wouldn't matter. He'd be going against the whole Carson family if he defended Isabella. Isabella's parents' absence offended the Carsons, putting Steve in an impossible position.
Steve was deeply uncomfortable. He couldn't finish the wedding and he couldn't face Isabella knowing he'd essentially slapped her family.
Claire was upset but speechless. Isabella's parents' absence was a huge advantage for Leann. Unless the situation changed, the marriage was doomed.
The atmosphere was tense. Charlie watched Leann's performance, plotting his retaliation.
A black BMW X6 arrived. A woman in her 50s emerged.
Chapter 1270
Leann greeted the woman, Jemma Simmons, a close friend with a wealthy family and connections to the Ward family (owners of several large supermarkets).
David's flour mill relied heavily on supermarket sales. He needed good relations with the Wards to increase his sales. Leann hoped Steve would marry a Ward daughter to boost their business.
Jemma, however, was displeased. "Leann, you didn't tell me about your son's wedding! I helped arrange a date for him with Mr. Ward's daughter!"
Leann explained, "My son was blind and chose a poor girl who got pregnant. I'm trying to embarrass her to make her give up."
Jemma asked, "What if she doesn't give up?"
Leann sneered, "She's not marrying into our family. Let her go."
Jemma said, "I'm here about the Ward family."
Leann eagerly asked, "What did Mr. Ward say?"
Jemma whispered, "Mr. Ward's daughter returned from abroad and had a relationship with a black man."
Leann nodded. "Didn't you say they broke up?"
Jemma sighed, "They broke up, but two days ago, it was discovered she's pregnantโฆ"
Leann exclaimed, "Pregnant? By the black man?"
Jemma said, "Yes. And she wants to keep the baby. Mr. Ward only has one daughter. An unmarried daughter with a childโฆit's a huge problem."
Jemma looked at Leann meaningfully. "Leann, this is good news. Don't blame me for not helping you."
Leann asked, "What is it?"
Jemma whispered, "Mrs. Ward told me privately that if your family marries her daughter and accepts the child, Mr. Ward will offer a 30 million dowry and give you half the flour shelves in his supermarket chain!"
