The Amazing Son-in-Law: Chapters 1446-1450
Chapter 1446
Charlie Wade shielded half his face with his hand, unsure how to respond to his father, Jacob Wilson. Jacob answered a call: "Hey Claire, I'm back with Charlie."
Claire's furious voice came from the backseat: "Dad! You've disappointed me!"
Jacob yelped in terror. The phone slipped from his hand, falling into a gap. Ignoring it, he stared in horror at Claire: "Cla…Claire? Why are you in the car?"
Claire seethed, "Why can't I be? If I weren't, I wouldn't know you'd been cheating!"
Jacob protested, "Don't be ridiculous! When did I cheat?"
Claire retorted, "You and Matilda exchange expensive gifts, have secret dinners. That's cheating!"
Jacob insisted, "It's not cheating! Matilda and I are respectful, never crossed boundaries. Besides, your mother and I are separated; divorce is imminent. Even if it were cheating, it's a new relationship!"
Claire's face flushed, tears welling. "How could you? I always thought you were a good father and husband. After twenty years together, even without love, there's family affection! You should respect Mom!"
Jacob explained, "I didn't disrespect her. If I did, I'd have reconciled with Matilda. I respect her enough to divorce her formally before being with Matilda!"
Claire cried, "Why divorce Mom for Matilda? Is that moral? Does Matilda know it's immoral to be a third party?!"
Jacob blurted, "Matilda's not the third party! Your mother is!"
Claire was stunned: "Dad, what are you talking about?!"
Jacob said coldly, "I'm not lying! I should have been with Matilda. If your mother hadn't interfered, taking me to a hotel after I got drunk, Matilda wouldn't have left! She's the immoral third party!"
Claire was shocked. Her mother had mentioned a past love, calling the woman a "vixen," without details. She'd believed her parents' relationship had been normal, with a minor setback. Now, she realized her mother had been the third party. This completely changed her understanding of her parents' two-decade relationship.
Chapter 1447
Claire was speechless. Jacob, overcome with emotion, wept: "Your mother and I had no emotional foundation. I barely spoke to her before that night. Matilda is far better than your mother. Any man would choose Matilda. I was helpless!"
Jacob looked sadly out the window. "I planned my life with Matilda after graduation—studying in the US, getting married there. Going abroad was huge then; everyone tried. We planned a high-end immigrant visa. It was all bright…then your mother took advantage of my drunkenness, drove Matilda away, ruined my happiness, and my life plan!"
"Why have I been unmotivated for so many years? Why don't I look like a prestigious university graduate? Because your mother ruined my trajectory, my direction, my motivation!"
Jacob sobbed, "My life is ruined. You see your mother as wronged, but have you considered my suffering these twenty years?"
Claire also cried silently. She hadn't realized her father's suffering. Her mother's actions had changed his life drastically. He’d been a promising student, but became a failure in his mother-in-law's eyes. His mother's interference was responsible for that. Fairly, her mother ruined his life, turning a vibrant young man into a middle-aged man. He'd suffered in silence.
Claire sobbed, "Dad, don't cry. It's my fault. I wrongly blamed you. I'm sorry…"
Jacob sighed, "Dad doesn't want your apology, just your understanding."
Claire nodded, sighing, "I won't interfere with your relationships. I just hope you handle them well."
Claire couldn't prevent her father from seeing Matilda, but out of respect for her mother, she couldn't fully support his relationship. She decided to stop worrying about her parents' affairs, past and present. Jacob was relieved; this was the best outcome. He said, "Thank you, Claire!"
Claire added, "Dad, don't wear the watch Matilda gave you at home; Mom might ask questions."
Chapter 1448
"Understood!" Jacob exclaimed. "I won't wear it at home!"
Charlie, though silent, felt relief for Jacob. He'd endured Elaine for years mainly for Claire. His paternal love was immense. He never blamed Elaine for his past grievances—a testament to his fatherly love.
Back at Thompson First, Charlie saw Nanako Ito at the community gate, wearing a hood. He recognized her. Knowing his wife and father were in the car, he couldn't stop, deciding to explain later.
At the villa, Jacob quickly hid the watch in his BMW. Claire sighed, whispering to Charlie, "He's so pitiful…He must have been wronged for years, right?"
Charlie nodded. "Dad's been suppressed for twenty-six or seven years. Most people would've collapsed."
Claire asked, "Did you know all this? You don't seem surprised."
Charlie replied, "I heard about it at his alumni reunion."
Claire nodded, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Charlie sighed, "After that incident, she disappeared. You were distraught, focused on your mother. I couldn't add to your troubles."
Claire nodded and sighed. Charlie, remembering Nanako, said, "You and Dad go in. I'll go out."
Claire asked, "Why, so late?"
Charlie said, "I'll buy Dad some liver protection pills. He drank."
Claire said, "Let me go."
Charlie waved, "Go in with Dad. If Mom nags, help reconcile."
Chapter 1449
Nanako Ito was gone when Charlie exited. He searched but couldn't find her. He'd been sure it was her. She must have come to see him, but why disappear? He sighed, baffled by her actions.
Nanako was hiding in a milk tea shop, watching Charlie. She felt strange. She'd come to see him, knowing her chances against Aurora were slim, and she might be injured. Her family didn't want her to continue.
But she felt a warrior shouldn't give up, so she decided to compete, accepting the risk of injury. Her father sent a private jet and medical team for immediate evacuation and treatment in Tokyo.
She might not see Charlie again after the competition. So she came to see him. But seeing a beautiful woman in the car—Charlie's wife—she felt she shouldn't bother a married man and started to leave. However, she still wanted to know if he'd seen her, so she ordered milk tea.
Her feelings were complex. She blamed him for defeating her mentor, yet admired his power. She felt ashamed after his previous scolding; thinking of him softened her. She realized this was more than admiration; it was a crush.
She'd received rigorous training, possessing excellent psychological resilience. But lately, Charlie's presence accelerated her heartbeat. Even from afar, her heart raced. Seeing his regretful expression brought her joy, mirroring the satisfaction she felt seeing distress in his eyes during the fight.
Chapter 1450
She asked for another milk tea, but the shop was closing. Then she saw Charlie heading towards the gate, so she ran out.
Charlie, believing Nanako was gone, went to buy liver protection pills for his father. At the pharmacy, he saw a large poster of Stefanie endorsing Oracle Nova Dias, with the slogan: "New Chinese Medicine, New Domestic Products. I trust Oracle Nova Dias!"
Several people were buying it for collecting purposes. The salesperson mentioned its effectiveness for spleen and stomach issues. One man bought a whole box to collect.
Charlie was surprised by Stefanie's influence. After the others left, he bought liver protection pills. As he looked at the ingredients, he thought about the market for liver protection drugs and the lost prescriptions in the "Apocalyptic Book," including liver protection formulas. After Nova Dias' success, he could launch Oracle liver protection tablets.
Suddenly, a figure rushed toward him. He prepared for a counterattack, but saw Nanako Ito, wearing a hood. He was surprised. Nanako, nervous and ashamed, handed him her milk tea, smiling, "Charlie, please drink!"
