The Amazing Son-in-Law, Chapters 1581-1585
Chapter 1581
Charlie Wade followed Loreen into the luxurious Eastcliff villa. The living room was enormous, nearly the size of a small banquet hall. Many of Eastcliff's prominent figures were gathered, chatting in small groups. Mrs. Thomas, accompanied by her husband, conversed with friends.
Loreen quickly said to Charlie, "My grandmother is over there. I'll take you to see her."
Charlie nodded. "Then I'll give your grandmother the gift I prepared."
Reaching the elderly couple, Loreen introduced, "Grandpa and Grandma, this is my university classmate, Charlie Wade."
The Lady smiled warmly. "Oh, Loreen's classmate! Welcome!" She then asked, "Loreen, I remember you had a close friend in college named Claire Wilson, right?"
Charlie interjected, "Hello, Grandma Thomas. I'm Claire Wilson's husband. She wanted to come to your birthday, but family matters prevented her, so she asked me to come in her place. Please forgive her absence."
The Lady smiled. "Oh, that Claire is married now!" Turning to Loreen, she said seriously, "Loreen, your classmates are marrying. You don't even have a boyfriend! Stop going to Aurouss Hill. Find a boyfriend in Eastcliff and get married soon. It would put my mind at ease!"
Loreen felt conflicted. She deeply loved Charlie, intending to marry only him. But he was her best friend's husband, a fact now known to her family. The future seemed impossible. While the Thomas family wasn't the most powerful in Eastcliff, they were still influential. How could they accept their granddaughter dating a married man? Even if he were divorced and remarried, the scandal would be damaging. She felt despondent.
Suddenly, a discordant voice called, "Grandma! Grandpa!"
Loreen turned to see her cousin, Sam, approaching with a troubled expression. "Cousin," she asked, "I heard you had an operation. How's your recovery?"
Sam's annoyance flared. "Don't mention that damned operation! It makes me furious!"
Mrs. Thomas said distressedly, "Loreen, your cousin suffered terribly!"
Charlie, without turning, recognized the voice. It was Sam Kilgore, the young man forced to swallow a necklace at Jasmine's house. He was Loreen's cousin, son of her aunt. This was interesting.
Chapter 1582
Loreen introduced Sam to Charlie. As soon as she finished, Charlie turned, causing Sam to react with shock. After regaining his composure, Sam gritted his teeth. "Wade! I've been looking for you! You dared to come to my grandmother's house? I'm going to get you!"
Loreen was startled. "Brother, why are you talking to him like that? Charlie is a guest."
Sam said, "Do you know why I had an operation?"
Loreen replied, "Mom said you swallowed a necklace."
"Yes!" Sam exclaimed. "Why? Because of this bastard!"
Charlie retorted, "Master Kilgore, did I force you to swallow it? Did I break your mouth and shove it down your throat?"
Sam was speechless. Charlie hadn't forced him, but he'd lost a bet and swallowed the necklace out of pride. He considered Charlie the culprit. He cursed, "Wade! I'm settling this with you!"
Ignoring him, Charlie approached Mrs. Thomas, presenting his gift. "Grandma Thomas, this is a birthday gift from Claire and me. Please accept it."
Mrs. Thomas, despite the tension, politely accepted the gift. Sam, enraged that Charlie ignored him, snatched the gift box from his grandmother and threw it on the floor. Pointing at Charlie, he shouted, "Wade, get out! Go back to Aurouss Hill and prepare to die! I'll kill you in two days!"
Charlie responded calmly, "Sam, for Loreen's sake, I call you Master Kilgore, but don't push your luck. Otherwise, don't blame me for disregarding her feelings."
Loreen angrily said, "Cousin, what are you doing? Charlie's a guest! Why are you throwing away their gift?" She picked up the damaged box and fan.
Sam scoffed, "What good could he give Grandma? Just a broken fan. He's trash!"
Mrs. Thomas sighed. She suspected Sam was to blame for the situation, not Charlie. She said, "Sam, your words are so shallow. Gifts represent thought, regardless of value."
Sam then produced a jade Maitreya Buddha, claiming it was worth at least 30 million, far surpassing Charlie's fan.
Chapter 1583
Charlie sneered. "Sam, have you forgotten the necklace you swallowed?" Sam had been brooding over the incident, believing Charlie and Travis Lane had conspired against him. He felt Charlie had gotten away with it. He planned to confront Charlie in Aurouss Hill after the new year but was shocked to find him at his grandmother's house. He wished to attack Charlie immediately, if not for the birthday celebration.
He yelled, "Wade, you cheated me! I haven't settled this yet, and now you dare to show up here?" He then demanded, "Tell the truth, was Travis Lane in on it?"
Charlie scoffed, "If you can't handle losing, just say it. Being a sore loser is worse."
Sam flew into a rage. "You say I can't handle losing?!"
Charlie smiled, "Then let's gamble again."
Sam agreed, "Okay! What's the bet?"
Charlie proposed, "You said my fan is worth a few hundred dollars. If my fan is more valuable than your jade, you eat your jade, just like the necklace."
Sam fumed, "Are you looking for death? I'll have you killed!"
Loreen intervened, "Cousin, Charlie's my friend! Don't go too far!"
Sam retorted, "I'll kill him this time!"
Charlie calmly said, "You still won't admit you can't handle losing. Dare you bet?"
Sam, confidently, accepted the challenge. "My jade is worth 24 million. How much is your fan?"
Chapter 1584
Charlie didn't know the fan's value but recognized it as a rare painting by Baishi, potentially worth tens or even hundreds of millions. He suggested getting an appraisal.
Sam scoffed, calling the fan ugly. Someone in the crowd recognized it as a famous Baishi fan, possibly the one sold at Christie's for 48.88 million. They even mentioned it was owned by Chairman Sun of the Sun Group. There was speculation about whether it was authentic or stolen.
Sam, sneering, declared it a fake, claiming Charlie tried to fool his grandmother. Mrs. Thomas urged them to stop arguing.
Sam, unconvinced, displayed his own expensive jade pendant. He challenged Charlie, if the fan was real, and worth more than his jade.
Chapter 1585
Charlie agreed to the bet: if he lost, he'd eat the fan; if Sam lost, he'd eat the jade. Sam, adamant about the fan being a fake, taunted Charlie. Charlie simply suggested they get a professional appraisal.
Sam, however, revealed he'd invited Trevor, the eldest son of the Sun family, who would determine the fan's authenticity. Charlie showed no fear, which surprised Sam. He couldn't believe Charlie, someone from Aurouss Hill, would have ties to the powerful Sun family.
Just then, someone announced Trevor's arrival. The atmosphere became tense. Everyone, including Loreen's grandparents, became serious. Trevor, though young, held considerable influence. He’d come because Sam mentioned his beautiful sister. His interest also included Loreen herself.
Loreen’s grandfather greeted Trevor obsequiously. Trevor explained that Sam had invited him. Loreen’s grandfather expressed his delight.
