Chapter 56

Many guests presented Douglas with gifts. Charlie Wade, carrying a painting, approached Douglas and said, โ€œCongratulations, buddy. This is a small gift from us to celebrate your opening.โ€

Claire Wilson smiled and added, โ€œDouglas, congratulations on your grand opening. May your business prosper for years to come!โ€

Douglas leaned toward Charlie Wade, whispering with a mischievous smirk, โ€œHey, you and our class belle seem quite close, contrary to reports!โ€

Claire blushed. Charlie responded, โ€œStop it. If weโ€™re expecting, youโ€™ll be the first to know, and I expect a present from you!โ€

โ€œOf course!โ€ Douglas laughed. โ€œIโ€™ll give the little one a big present!โ€

An average-looking woman with heavy makeup approached and asked, โ€œDouglas, who are they?โ€

โ€œThis is my college friend, Charlie Wade, and Claire Wilson, our class belle and Charlieโ€™s wife.โ€ He then introduced the woman beside him, โ€œThis is my fiancรฉe, Lily Lewis.โ€

Lily began to speak, then stopped, correcting herself. She smiled and said, โ€œDouglas talks about you both all the time. Youโ€™re a perfect match!โ€

Charlie ignored her comment and handed the painting to Lily. โ€œThis is a small token of our affection.โ€

Lily grinned. โ€œOh, you really didnโ€™t have to!โ€ Despite her words, she quickly accepted the large gift box.

Charlie replied, โ€œSupport your business; weโ€™ll amuse ourselves.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Douglas apologized. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Charlie, I have to greet the other friends.โ€

As soon as Charlie and Claire left, Lily quickly opened the gift box, revealing a scroll. She frowned in disappointment. โ€œWhat is this? What did your friend give us?โ€

Douglas answered, โ€œCanโ€™t you see? Itโ€™s a painting!โ€

Lily clicked her tongue. โ€œSome old, rotten paint. I bet itโ€™s only worth a couple of hundred bucks.โ€

Douglas said sternly, โ€œYou canโ€™t put a price on everything! Their sincerity and goodwill are what matter.โ€

โ€œEnough with the holy speech! I warn you, donโ€™t associate with these kinds of friends! They have the nerve to give us such a cheap painting!โ€

Douglasโ€™s face darkened. โ€œLily, are you really that much of a snob?โ€

Lily retorted indignantly, โ€œDouglas, how could you say that? Donโ€™t you forget my father invested most of the money in this restaurant!โ€

Douglas blinked, speechless and self-conscious.

Clinton approached, seemingly recovered from the car-burning incident, his arrogant expression returning. He handed over a thick envelope. โ€œDoug, I donโ€™t know what to give you, so hereโ€™s some โ€˜financial help.โ€™โ€

Lily thanked him profusely, estimating the envelope contained eight to ten thousand dollars. She smiled shyly and said, โ€œThank you so much!โ€

Clinton gestured carelessly. โ€œI see Charlie Wade gave you something. What is it?โ€

Lily scoffed contemptuously. โ€œA painting. Probably from a junkyard saleโ€”a couple hundred dollarsโ€™ worth of rubbish!โ€

Clinton smirked. โ€œOnce a loser, always a loser!โ€

Chapter 57

Charlie, Claire, and Loreen sat together. Clinton joined them, sitting near Loreen.

He asked Loreen with a wide smile, โ€œLoreen, I heard youโ€™ve come to Aurouss Hill to help Emgrand Group. Is that true?โ€

Loreen replied, โ€œYes, I just started.โ€

Clinton smiled wider. โ€œWhat a coincidence! My father is the deputy general manager of a department at Emgrand! Iโ€™ll ask him to look after you at work.โ€

Many exclaimed in shock, โ€œWow, Clinton, your dad is the deputy general manager of Emgrand Group?โ€

โ€œYup!โ€ Clinton nodded happily. โ€œHe was promoted last year.โ€

Someone flattered, โ€œA deputy general managerโ€™s annual income must be millions, right? Thatโ€™s impressive!โ€

Clinton chuckled. โ€œThatโ€™s just the salary. My father has considerable authority and many side benefits. Youโ€™ve heard of Emgrand Groupโ€™s glamorous hotel project, right? When itโ€™s finished, my father could earn ten to twenty million.โ€

A man asked, โ€œClinton, I want to join Emgrand Group, but I never hear back after submitting my resume. Could you speak to your father?โ€

Clinton nodded smoothly. โ€œSure! Send me your resume. Iโ€™ll talk to my father.โ€

Charlie frowned. He didnโ€™t know Clintonโ€™s father held such a high position. He decided to message Doris later to fire Clintonโ€™s father.

He asked tentatively, โ€œClinton, since your father is so powerful, why doesnโ€™t he get you in?โ€

Clinton sneered disdainfully. โ€œIf I join Emgrand, I canโ€™t hide my relationship with my father. People will watch me constantly.โ€

He shifted into a complacent posture. โ€œSo, I never considered joining. I own a company that supplies building materials, so I can deal with the group through my father and supply them!โ€

โ€œDamn!โ€ Someone exclaimed, โ€œYou must be making a lot of money!โ€

Clinton grunted. โ€œNothing worth mentioningโ€”maybe a few million a year.โ€

He turned to Charlie, speaking pompously, โ€œCharlie Wade, what do you do now? Donโ€™t tell me youโ€™ve been doing housework since you โ€˜marriedโ€™ Claire.โ€

Everyone laughed.

Charlie shrugged emphatically. โ€œYes, besides laundry and cooking, I take my wife to and from work and give her massages daily. Itโ€™s fun and fulfilling.โ€

Clinton was furious. How dare this man be so smug?

He lost his temper, gritting his teeth. โ€œCharlie Wade, I didnโ€™t know you were such a happy moocher!โ€

โ€œSo?โ€ Charlie answered smugly. โ€œI didnโ€™t steal or rob. I mooch with housework; why canโ€™t I be happy?โ€

The laughter died down, replaced by stunned silence. They had never seen such audacity! And they envied him!

Lily, Douglasโ€™s fiancรฉe, then spoke, thanking everyone for attending and for their gifts. She announced they would reveal the value of each gift.

Chapter 58

Douglas hadnโ€™t planned this, but Lily was insistent.

The attendees werenโ€™t surprised; the gift values would show how well their classmates were doing.

Lily began the announcements:

โ€œThank you, Jack Brown, for your one thousand dollars!โ€ โ€œThank you, Bella Walsh, for the pair of gold ingots!โ€ โ€œThank you, Ola Rivers, for the gorgeous vase!โ€ โ€œThank you, Clinton Tucker, for your ten thousand dollars!โ€

The first few gifts were mainly around one thousand dollars. Clintonโ€™s ten thousand dollar gift sent shockwaves through the restaurant.

Many looked at Clinton with awe, praising his generosity. He wore a smug expression.

Lily continued, โ€œThank you, Charlie Wade and Claire Wilson, for the old painting!โ€

Threatening laughter echoed. An old painting? Worth a hundred dollars? Douglas had hosted an extravagant reception (a few hundred dollars per person); how dare they bring an old painting?

Clinton sneered. โ€œCharlie Wade, you can afford a BMW 520, why are you giving such a shabby thing?โ€

Charlie smiled faintly. โ€œYou donโ€™t know its origin, why say itโ€™s tattered?โ€

Clinton: โ€œDonโ€™t think I donโ€™t know what youโ€™re thinking. You bought cheap things to pass off as expensive ones!โ€ He asked, โ€œHow much did that painting cost? One hundred? Eighty bucks?โ€

Charlieโ€™s pale smile remained. โ€œThe painting is worth more than all the gifts today!โ€

Clinton laughed wickedly. If everyone gave a thousand dollars, that would be twenty-something thousand. โ€œYou mean to say the painting is worth more than thirty thousand?โ€

โ€œMore than that.โ€

Thunderous laughter filled the restaurant. They thought Charlie was delusional and arrogant! An ancient painting worth tens of thousands? Was he trying to fool them?

Chapter 59

Hearing Lilyโ€™s father was an art appraiser, everyone looked contemptuously at Charlie. They all shared the same thoughtโ€”Charlie was so unlucky! His boast was about to be ruined by a professional!

Claire blushed timidly. She whispered to Charlie, โ€œMany people are watching you. Youโ€™d better not persist; itโ€™ll be embarrassing!โ€

Claire was skeptical of Charlieโ€™s sudden claim that the painting was extremely expensive.

Charlie was indifferent. โ€œIf you donโ€™t believe me, let the professional do his job.โ€ He added, โ€œOh yes, everyone, remember what Clinton said? Heโ€™s betting with me againโ€”heโ€™s going to eat the table.โ€

Clinton gritted his teeth, remembering his burning car. He growled, โ€œCharlie Wade, you snobbish guy! If that painting is really worth that much, Iโ€™ll eat this table right now!โ€

Charlie nodded calmly. โ€œAlright, if it is, Iโ€™ll eat it.โ€

The painting was by Rachel Ruysch, a Dutch Golden Age painter, from a reputable antique store. He was certain it was authentic.

Claire wanted to stop Charlie, but heโ€™d already agreed to the bet. Loreen felt strange. Why did Charlie seem so confident? She remembered recent events and knew he was enigmatic.

Clinton saw his chance for revenge. โ€œOkay, everyone be witness! Letโ€™s bring Lilyโ€™s father down to appraise the painting!โ€

Lily called her father. A minute later, Lawson Lewis slowly walked down the stairs.

Chapter 60

Everyone cast a contemptuous look at Charlie. They all thoughtโ€”Charlie was so unlucky!

Claire whispered, โ€œMany people are watching you.โ€

Charlie: โ€œIf you donโ€™t believe me, let the professional do his job.โ€

Lawson came onto the stage, and Lily handed him the gift box. โ€œDad, please appraise this painting. Someone said itโ€™s worth tens of thousands of dollars!โ€

She looked disdainfully at Charlie. How could a moocher afford such an expensive painting? It must be fake!

Under everyoneโ€™s curious gazes, Lawson took the box, opened the scroll, and carefully examined the painting.

Several people said, โ€œDuh, it doesnโ€™t look that expensive!โ€ โ€œYeah! I bet itโ€™s only worth fifty bucks.โ€

Lawson studied the painting for a few minutes before asking, โ€œDid you say this painting is a gift from Douglasโ€™s friend?โ€

Lily: โ€œYes, theyโ€™ve been friends since college!โ€ (She thought, Charlie Wade, you dare give him such a worthless piece of shit!)

However, Lawson said with a grateful sigh, โ€œIndeed, it seems he is a good friend! Why would one give such a precious gift otherwise?โ€

Everyone was shocked! Irritable, Clinton cursed inside his head.

Lawson cleared his throat and said earnestly, โ€œThis is the authentic work of Rachel Ruysch, a Dutch Golden Age painter. Though not as popular now, she was one of the most outstanding painters ever, and the first female member of the Confrerie Pictura.โ€ He looked back at the painting and said, โ€œI estimate the market value for this painting is about two hundred thousand dollars.โ€

โ€œWhat? Two hundred thousand dollars?โ€ Lily was surprised. The painting she thought was worth less than a hundred dollars was so valuable!

Douglas was surprised too. He looked at Charlie and stuttered, โ€œHey, Charlie, why did you give me something so expensive? I canโ€™t accept this; itโ€™s too valuableโ€ฆโ€

Charlie smiled. โ€œDoug, itโ€™s just my token of affection; letโ€™s not put a price on everything.โ€

Douglas was touched and happy. He never thought his college friend would be so generous!

Clintonโ€™s face was pale. What was happening? That bad painting was worth two hundred thousand? Damn it!

The rest of the people were just as surprised. No one dared look down on Charlie anymore! He was someone who could buy a two hundred thousand dollar painting as a gift!

Everyone envied Douglas for receiving such an expensive gift! Lily was also surprised. She instantly changed her opinion of Charlie Wade!

She couldnโ€™t help but look at Charlie with wonder. She was impressed by his generosity!

Claire frowned in confusion and asked, โ€œCharlie, how much did you actually spend on that painting?โ€

Charlie grinned and said softly, โ€œHonestly, it didnโ€™t cost me much. It was an associate who sold me the painting. He got it at a discounted price from a collector, so the price he gave me was low too.โ€

Claire pursed her lips in disbelief. โ€œIs that so? He was willing to sell a two hundred thousand dollar painting for only a few thousand? It seems like a free lunch to me.โ€

โ€œNot everyone takes money so seriously. Iโ€™m one of them. Otherwise, I wouldnโ€™t have given the painting to Douglas, would I?โ€

Claire nodded lightly.

Charlie stood up and looked at the flustered Clinton with a calm smile. โ€œSo, Mr. Clinton, how would you like the table prepared? Do you want to gnaw on it directly, or should I slice it into pieces for you?โ€
