The Amazing Son-in-Law: Chapters 96-100
Chapter 96
Charlie Wade was furious. "Don't you know everyone in this room is powerful? They could have you killed if they chose!"
Jasmine saw Charlie's manipulation and played along, adopting a demanding expression. "The Moore family is influential."
The fat man was shocked. He knew the Moores held significant power. Offending Jasmine would be fatal. Anxiously, he looked at Quilt. "Quilt, help me! This isn't the agreement!"
Quilt's face changed. "You… you scammed the Moores and want to blame me?! I'll kill you!"
Drawing a dagger, Quilt menacingly approached the fat man. "You said the Moores trusted your appraisal! You said this junk would sell!"
Jasmine watched them fight before turning to Charlie. "Excuse me, Mr. Wade."
Charlie nodded. "Let's go."
As they left, Quilt cowered at Jasmine's feet, terrified. He abandoned the fat man. "Miss, spare me! For my years of service…"
Before Jasmine could respond, Travis scoffed. "Death wish, old man? You tried to swindle me and your master! Two or three billion dollars! Do you think the Moores will save you?"
Quilt's face drained, paralyzed with fear.
Travis added, "Even if they did, I, Travis Lane, wouldn't let you off so easily!"
Quilt collapsed into tears.
Jasmine sighed, frustrated. "Excuse me, Mr. Wade. Employing such an incompetent fool is humiliating."
Charlie replied, "There's darkness with light. Don't blame yourself, Miss Moore."
Travis, Matthew (Lancaster), and Graham (Quinton family) then left the lobby. Travis rushed to Charlie, shaking his hand vigorously. "Thank you, Mr. Wade! I avoided being scammed!"
An ashamed Matthew added, "Mr. Wade is a natural! I didn't see the jade alterations. I'm embarrassed."
"Thank you, Mr. Wade. We avoided a huge loss and damage to our family's reputation!"
Charlie smiled. "Miss Moore asked me to appraise the jade."
After a brief conversation, Charlie and Jasmine left in the car, restoring the lobby's calm. Charlie noticed men in black rushing in—presumably to deal with Quilt and the fat man.
Chapter 97
Jasmine had a cold expression in the car. Having such a worthless family member was infuriating. Even worse, Quilt had tried to deceive her publicly.
Had Quilt succeeded, Jasmine would have been deeply ashamed of losing the Moore family fortune.
Luckily, Charlie saved her.
Jasmine retrieved a credit card. "Mr. Wade, this has about one million dollars. The PIN is six 8s. Thank you."
She sighed. Why did such a skilled appraiser work for a small family? He could have built a huge appraisal business.
Charlie hesitated, looking at the card. One million was significant, but nothing to the Moores. He had over nine billion in his own account.
Why accept it?
But refusing might seem suspicious. He took the card. "Thank you, Miss Moore."
Jasmine smiled. "You're too polite, Mr. Wade."
She asked, "Where are you going, Mr. Wade?"
Charlie grinned. "Can you drop me at the vegetable market? I need to buy vegetables for dinner."
Jasmine was stunned. "I've heard about you, Mr. Wade. You have amazing skills! I'll offer you a million-dollar annual salary."
Charlie waved his hand. "I'm used to this lifestyle."
Jasmine was shocked. The reports of him being a dependent son-in-law seemed true. She had initially thought he lacked opportunity. Now, she realized he chose this life, and found it distasteful.
Her opinion of Charlie changed instantly. Charlie knew she'd look down on him—giving him the last laugh.
At the market, Charlie left the car after thanking Jasmine. He bought vegetables and headed home.
Chapter 98
Charlie felt helpless. Jacob had broken the vase that morning, and then exploited his absence to visit Antique Street again.
Jacob laughed, "These celadon cups are worth over half a million! Guess how much I paid?"
Claire hesitated. "Three hundred thousand?"
"No!"
"Two hundred thousand?"
"Wrong!"
Charlie knew instantly the cups were fake, worth a few hundred dollars at most.
Jacob smiled, "I bought them for three hundred dollars! Amazing!"
Claire was shocked. "Seriously? Three hundred dollars?"
Elaine, hearing the commotion, emerged from the kitchen. "Are you sure they're genuine?"
Jacob patted his chest. "Don't worry! I had them verified!"
Elaine picked up a cup, grinning. Charlie remained silent. He knew they were fake but didn't want to ruin Jacob's joy.
Jacob, elated, continued, "The seller said it's not a complete set. The full set would be worth much more!"
Charlie stopped him. "Dad, don't be greedy. Two cups are enough."
Jacob glared, "What do you know about antiques? Are you trying to stop me?"
Charlie apologized, "No, do as you please."
He didn't care; it wasn't his money.
Claire added, "Dad, why so much? We can't eat or drink with them. The price difference is huge. Are they even real?"
Jacob scoffed, "You don't understand. This is a vintage piece! Only someone with insight would see it!"
He continued boasting, "Others were fighting to buy them! I might not get them tomorrow!"
Elaine urged, "If they're so valuable, get the rest tomorrow!"
Claire pulled Charlie aside. "I don't trust this seller. It seems like a scam. Dad will go back tomorrow; can you go with him to prevent him from getting scammed?"
Charlie nodded. He wouldn't have bothered, but since Claire asked, he couldn't let Jacob get cheated.
Chapter 99
It was the weekend. Jacob dragged Charlie to Antique Street early.
Jacob was energized. "Come! Let me show you how to find a good item!"
Charlie struggled to keep up, looking around. The street was packed with vendors setting up stalls.
Charlie saw mostly fakes. Tourists often happily bought imitations, unaware of their true value.
"Over here!"
Jacob excitedly pointed at a stall, joining a group of browsing tourists.
Charlie saw a spread of mud-stained antiques—fake blue and white porcelain, coins, cups, jade, and paintings.
The stall owner was a slim, dark-skinned man in a simple blue shirt, with greasy hair but an honest appearance.
Jacob pointed at a large-mouthed vase. "This completes my celadon set! It'll double their value!"
Charlie picked up the vase. "How much?"
"Twenty thousand dollars, minimum!"
Jacob almost laughed. "He doesn't know the value! Let's buy it!" He reached for his money.
Charlie stopped him. "Dad, it's not worth twenty thousand. We're not buying it."
"What? How much do you think it's worth?"
Charlie gestured to the owner, "This much."
"Five thousand?"
Charlie shook his head. "Fifty dollars, at most."
The owner was aghast. "Do you know antiques? This was my grandfather's!"
Jacob nervously tried to stop Charlie. "Don't talk nonsense. You're disrupting his business."
Charlie smiled, wiped mud from the vase's base, and pointed at the small English words. "Dad, look."
"Made in China."
Jacob froze, then his face reddened. "You… you cheater!"
Charlie waved the vase. "The manufacturer wouldn't openly sell fakes. You're clever covering it in mud. Thirty dollars?"
The owner's smile vanished.
Chapter 100
"Boss, I grabbed the wrong vase in a hurry."
Charlie picked up another mud-covered vase. "What about this one?"
"Made by Suzhou Craft Factory."
"I don't know what it says; I'm uneducated," the owner smirked, pretending disinterest.
Jacob, enraged, grabbed the owner. "Liar! Give me my money!"
"What money?! I've never seen you!" The owner struggled, knocking over his wares. The jade horse didn't break; it was plastic.
"I'll call the police!"
During their struggle, something fell from the owner's sleeve—a fist-sized white stone with crudely carved words: "Tranquility and Riches."
Charlie picked it up, sensing a powerful energy—spiritual energy or reiki.
He was thrilled. "Does this belong to you?"
The owner nodded.
"How much?"
Jacob was confused. "Why buy this useless stone? Everything he sells is fake!"
"It's just a stone to ward off bad energy," Charlie replied, smiling.
The owner tried to escape. "Are you interested?"
"Just the price."
"Since you have good taste… twenty thousand dollars!"
Charlie scoffed. "Are you crazy? Three hundred. Or I'll call the police for selling fakes!"
"Three hundred?" "Okay, since you understand antiques"
Charlie smiled, gripping the stone.
Jacob was puzzled. As he was about to question Charlie, a voice called out, "That stone looks good. I'll buy it!"
