Chapter 35

When Lydia heard her sons out, she shot them a stern look. โ€œSeriously, Siennaโ€™s been pampered her whole life. Learning to work hard and cook for this variety show isnโ€™t exactly a walk in the park for her!โ€

After a momentโ€™s pause, she suggested, โ€œWhat if Jamar and Semna just quit the show?โ€ It would save them from any more drama and prevent any clashes with Thorbe.

Leon was quick to jump in, shaking his head. โ€œNo way! Letting them quit now would just damage their reputation.โ€ It was no better than giving in to Phoebe. He added, โ€œPlus, Sienna has always dreamed of making it in entertainment. If she bails now, itโ€™ll be a huge letdown for her.โ€

Lydia chimed in, โ€œSo, whatโ€™s the plan then?โ€

Leon had an idea. โ€œHow about we just call Phoebe and ask her to step back?โ€

Lydia hesitated. โ€œYou want me to call her?โ€

Leon nodded. โ€œYeah, she really cares about your health. Just tell her you havenโ€™t been feeling well and that youโ€™d like her back home. Have you been sleeping poorly lately?โ€ He added, seeing the opening, โ€œThis could be the perfect chance to bring her back without too much fuss. As long as she leaves the variety show, we can make it up to her later. After all, sheโ€™s our sister. We wonโ€™t let her down.โ€

When the time was right, heโ€™d arrange for Phoebe to get some better opportunities. Then Cain pitched in, โ€œIf we can get her back on board, I can give her a role as the second female lead in my new drama.โ€ The main one was already set for Stenn.

Lydia replied with a hint of understanding. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll give her a call. But doesnโ€™t everyone have to turn in their phones in the show?โ€ Since sheโ€™d been cooped up at home for days, she had been watching the livestream.

Leon chimed in, โ€œNo worries, Iโ€™ll just reach out to the directorโ€™s team to get Phoebeโ€™s current number.โ€

Lydia nodded in agreement. โ€œSounds good.โ€

Before long, Leon had a new number from the directorโ€™s team. Lydia grabbed her phone and dialed.

In the courtyard, Phoebe was busy weaving storage baskets. When her phone rang, she picked it up and checked the screen. The caller ID showed just the number, but she immediately recognized it as Lydiaโ€™s. She had memorized all her familyโ€™s numbers, driven by her desire for connection.

Phoebe answered, hit record, and switched to loudspeaker mode. โ€œHello,โ€

Before long, Lydia chimed in, โ€œPhoebe, itโ€™s me.โ€

Phoebeโ€™s tone was wary as she replied, โ€œWhatโ€™s up!โ€

Lydia said, โ€œI havenโ€™t been feeling great lately, struggling to sleep. Iโ€™d like you to come back tomorrow.โ€

Phoebe chuckled. โ€œCome back to whip up your soup and give you a massage?โ€

Lydia felt a bit caught off guardโ€”yeah, that was part of it. But hearing it from Phoebe made it sound kind of embarrassing. โ€œI just want you back to check on me,โ€ Lydia insisted.

Phoebe shot back, โ€œSo itโ€™s not that you miss me. Just needing a hand because youโ€™re unwell. Is that all I am to you, a handy ladle maid?โ€

Lydia felt a blush creep in. She was used to Phoebe caring for her, but now that she wasnโ€™t around, it stung a bit. Still, she wouldnโ€™t admit that out loud, putting on a front. โ€œWhatโ€™s with your tone? Iโ€™m your mother! If I say come back, you come back!โ€

Lexie couldnโ€™t help but frown when she heard the voice coming through the microphone.

Phoebe asked, โ€œDo you know Iโ€™m on a variety show!โ€

Lydia replied, โ€œOf course I know. But itโ€™s just a variety show. Itโ€™s not a big deal for you to come back.โ€

Phoebe shot back, โ€œI see. You donโ€™t want me to keep going because Siennaโ€™s performance on the show was just soโ€”soโ€ฆโ€ She added pointedly, โ€œYou just called me to suggest I quit.โ€

Lydia didnโ€™t expect Phoebe to see through their intentions. While she didnโ€™t admit it outright, she said, โ€œI watched the live broadcast. Sienna did really well. If you come back, Leon can help you land some decent gigs. Cain said his new drama could offer you the second lead role.โ€

She sounded like they were doing her a huge favor.

Phoebe scoffed, โ€œWell, thanks a lot. Leonโ€™s connections?! I wouldnโ€™t dream of asking for those. Who knows how many traps are waiting for me? Itโ€™s happened before, and Iโ€™m not falling for it again. Cainโ€™s new dramaโ€”Sienna is the lead, right! Do you really want me to keep playing the supporting role for her?โ€

Lydia was on the speaker, too. Cain, known for his impulsive temperament, didnโ€™t hold back. โ€œThorbe, donโ€™t be ungrateful. If you werenโ€™t our sister, we wouldnโ€™t even bother with you. Thereโ€™s nothing wrong with playing the second female lead for Sienna. Why do you always compare yourself to her? Canโ€™t you just chill?โ€

Lexie frowned at this. Is this really how people talk? Helping an adoptive sister out while pushing their real sister down! What a twisted dynamic, she thought.

Phoebe shot back, โ€œI guess Iโ€™m just ungrateful then. What are you going to do about it! You guys were the ones who tried to freeze me out of the industry, and you did. Go ahead, keep trying. Iโ€™m not scared.โ€

Lydia chimed in, clearly annoyed, โ€œPhoebe, stop being dramatic. Weโ€™re family here. We wonโ€™t hold anything against you if you come back tomorrow.โ€

Lydia couldnโ€™t help but feel annoyed that Phoebe refused to come home even though she had personally called her.

Phoebe replied coolly, โ€œJust a reminder, Iโ€™ve cut ties with your whole family. So donโ€™t try to guilt-trip me. If youโ€™re feeling unwell, just go see a doctor. And if something happens to your family down the line, donโ€™t expect me to be there.โ€

After she finished talking, Phoebe didnโ€™t even wait for Lydia and the others to respondโ€”she just hung up the phone.

The busy tone echoed from her phone at the Jenkins family house, making Lydiaโ€™s expression darken even more. She tightened her grip on her cup of water, fuming, โ€œHow dare they act like this!โ€ Yet, beneath her anger was an unsettling emptiness. Does Phoebe really not care even when Iโ€™m not feeling well? she wondered.

The four brothers wore similar grim looks. โ€œSheโ€™s becoming more defiant by the day,โ€ Leon said, narrowing his eyes. โ€œLetโ€™s teach her a lesson.โ€ He was convinced that with them around, Phoebe wouldnโ€™t be able to snag any good opportunities in the entertainment world after this variety show. They had to push back hard.

Lydia was also determined to rein in Phoebeโ€™s attitude. โ€œShe needs to learn a lesson,โ€ she said, then added, โ€œBut donโ€™t forget sheโ€™s still your sister. Donโ€™t go too far!โ€

Leon smirked. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Mom, we know what weโ€™re doing.โ€ If it were anyone else, he would have pulled out all the stops a long time ago. But since it was his sister, he wanted to keep her under their control.

Lexie glanced at Phoebe with a hint of sympathy. โ€œYour mom and your brothers are really something else.โ€ Honestly, if she had relatives like that, she wouldnโ€™t be able to handle it either. No wonder Phoebe felt the need to cut ties with them.

Phoebe shrugged, a smile on her face. โ€œYou just get used to it.โ€ She struggled to wrap her head around the Jenkins familyโ€™s mindset. They clearly favored Sienna and told her not to compete with her, yet when she distanced herself, they seemed to be watching her closely.
