Chapter 36
Hearing a knock on the door, Lexie got up to open it. When she opened the door, she saw Reece standing there. She asked, โMr. Hill, what brings you here?โ
Reece glanced into the room. โIโm looking for Phoebe.โ
Phoebe walked over. โWhatโs up?โ
Reece said, โJamar canโt stop vomiting and has diarrhea. He wants to see you.โ
Phoebe raised her eyebrows. โHeโs not dying. Why does he want to see me!โ
Jamar is her biological brother, yet she is being so cold: Reece looked shocked. โHow can you say that?โ
Phoebe replied indifferently. โWhy not? Iโm not interested in seeing him. Thatโs it.โ She reached for the door to close it.
Reece quickly pushed the door back open. โPhoebe, no matter what issues you two have, this isnโt the time to be stubborn. Jamar said you couldโฆendโฆmedicine. Heโs really suffering right now. Please help him.โ
Phoebe sneered, โItโs already dark. You want me to go up the mountain to find medicinal herbs now! Even if I could see clearly, going up there at this hour? If something happens, are you responsible? In your eyes, is my life that worthless?โ
Reece was taken aback by Phoebeโs increasingly cold demeanor. He shook his head quickly. โNo, we donโt think that. I know what youโre capable of. And Iโll go with you.โ
That might ease their relationship a bit. He added, โPhoebe, can you really bear to see him suffer all night?โ
Jamar was on the verge of losing it, wanting to ask Phoebe for help with the medicine, but he couldnโt bring himself to do it. So Reece offered to reach out to Phoebe.
Aside from wanting to help Jamar, he also wanted to see if Phoebe still had feelings for her brother. He was worried and afraid that Phoebe might really be that heartless.
Phoebe said seriously, โWhat do I have to feel sorry about? I have nothing to do with him anymore. If heโs unwell, he should see a doctor; I wonโt help. Thereโs a clinic in the village. You can take him there.โ
With that, she forcefully shut the door, leaving a stunned Reece outside.
Reece hadnโt expected Phoebe to be so indifferent toward Jamar. It was indeed dark, but with Phoebeโs skills, going up the mountain to gather medicinal herbs wouldnโt be a problem at all. Yet she refused.
Reece felt a bit panicked. If she treats her brother like this, how will she treat me, her ex-boyfriend! Has Phoebe really made up her mind to cut ties with us?
Reece stood at the door, wanting to knock again, but he knew Phoebe: if she didnโt want to do something, no one could force her. So he turned around and went back to their room.
Jamar lay on the bed, pale and clutching his stomach. Seeing Reece come in, he quickly asked, โWhat did Phoebe say?โ
Reece shook his head. โShe said she wonโt help.โ
Disappointment spread across Jamarโs face. He took a deep breath. โIโm in this condition, and she can just ignore meโฆโ
For a moment, he felt truly miserable.
Reece sighed. โI think sheโs serious this time. Sheโs really decided to cut ties with you.โ
Jamar pressed his lips together. โIs she really that petty over such small matters? We didnโt mistreat her at all.โ
He was happy that his sister had been found and brought back.
In the past year or so, he and Phoebe had grown closer. She had been quite indulgent with him, and he knew she cared about him.
Tut now, is she really willing to cut off our sibling bond just like that? How does it come to this thought, Jamar?
Seeing Jamarโs disappointment and inability to accept it, Reece felt uneasy too. He couldnโt help but wonder: If I were the one vomiting and needed to go gather medicinal herbs, would Phoebe care?
He had been so sure she wouldnโt abandon him, but now he felt uncertain.
Jamar started feeling sick again and rushed out to vomit. When he returned, Reece suggested, โI can have someone from the crew take you to the village clinic.โ
At that moment, Sienna walked in with a cup of hot water. โYeah, Jamar, Iโll take you to the clinic.โ She knew Reece had gone to ask Phoebe for help with medicinal herbs. As it would seem, she didnโt want her brother to get better. She didnโt want to stop him outright, but deep down, she didnโt want Phoebe to help. Sure enough, she has become so heartless that she doesnโt care about Jamar anymore. This way, Jamar wonโt have to worry about her anymore, right?
Jamar felt terrible and could only nod in agreement. The crew members quickly came and took him to the village clinic for an IV drip.
Sienna looked at Jamar. โI stay here with you.โ
Jamar shook his head. โNo need. Youโve been working all day. Go rest.โ
Sienna said worriedly, โBut Iโm notโฆโ
Jamar gave her a reassuring look. โThere are crew members here. Iโll be fine. You should rest well tonight so you can stream tomorrow.โ
Sienna didnโt really want to say it. The clinic smelled of cheap disinfectant, and it made her uncomfortable. Plus, she wanted to get a good nightโs sleep after a long day, but she couldnโt just leave outright, so she pretended to agree to stay. She knew Jamar cared for her and didnโt want her to stay.
After Jamar finished speaking, Sienna said reluctantly, โAlright, Iโll head back then. If you need anything, just call me.โ
Jamar nodded. โOkay.โ
Sienna tucked him in and said, โGoodnight, Jamar.โ
Jamar forced a smile. โGoodnight, Sienna.โ
Watching Sienna leave, Jamar couldnโt help but think, โIf we hadnโt had that falling out, would Phoebe have stayed by myโฆ'
As soon as he closed his eyes, memories flooded back. He had a weak stomach and had vomited a few times before. Phoebe had taken time off work to stay by his side and care for him. She would even make medicinal herbs and warm oatmeal for him. She would remind him not to eat cold food and to eat on time. During that time, she would bring him homemade meals at work every day. He had enjoyed the care and attention from Phoebe back then. But sometimes, he would get impatient and wonder why she was so concerned about him. Now, he couldnโt help but miss those days.
Alone in the clinic getting an IV, Jamar felt vulnerable. He also wondered if Sienna really cared about him as a brother. Knowing he had diarrhea after eating an omelette for breakfast, she still served him strong-tasting fish for dinner. Is she really careless, or does she think I wonโt refuse? Jamar shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it anymore. He kept telling himself that Sienna was kind and wouldnโt do it on purpose.
