Chapter 36

Hearing a knock on the door, Lexie got up to open it. When she opened the door, she saw Reece standing there. She asked, โ€œMr. Hill, what brings you here?โ€

Reece glanced into the room. โ€œIโ€™m looking for Phoebe.โ€

Phoebe walked over. โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€

Reece said, โ€œJamar canโ€™t stop vomiting and has diarrhea. He wants to see you.โ€

Phoebe raised her eyebrows. โ€œHeโ€™s not dying. Why does he want to see me!โ€

Jamar is her biological brother, yet she is being so cold: Reece looked shocked. โ€œHow can you say that?โ€

Phoebe replied indifferently. โ€œWhy not? Iโ€™m not interested in seeing him. Thatโ€™s it.โ€ She reached for the door to close it.

Reece quickly pushed the door back open. โ€œPhoebe, no matter what issues you two have, this isnโ€™t the time to be stubborn. Jamar said you couldโ€ฆendโ€ฆmedicine. Heโ€™s really suffering right now. Please help him.โ€

Phoebe sneered, โ€œItโ€™s already dark. You want me to go up the mountain to find medicinal herbs now! Even if I could see clearly, going up there at this hour? If something happens, are you responsible? In your eyes, is my life that worthless?โ€

Reece was taken aback by Phoebeโ€™s increasingly cold demeanor. He shook his head quickly. โ€œNo, we donโ€™t think that. I know what youโ€™re capable of. And Iโ€™ll go with you.โ€

That might ease their relationship a bit. He added, โ€œPhoebe, can you really bear to see him suffer all night?โ€

Jamar was on the verge of losing it, wanting to ask Phoebe for help with the medicine, but he couldnโ€™t bring himself to do it. So Reece offered to reach out to Phoebe.

Aside from wanting to help Jamar, he also wanted to see if Phoebe still had feelings for her brother. He was worried and afraid that Phoebe might really be that heartless.

Phoebe said seriously, โ€œWhat do I have to feel sorry about? I have nothing to do with him anymore. If heโ€™s unwell, he should see a doctor; I wonโ€™t help. Thereโ€™s a clinic in the village. You can take him there.โ€

With that, she forcefully shut the door, leaving a stunned Reece outside.

Reece hadnโ€™t expected Phoebe to be so indifferent toward Jamar. It was indeed dark, but with Phoebeโ€™s skills, going up the mountain to gather medicinal herbs wouldnโ€™t be a problem at all. Yet she refused.

Reece felt a bit panicked. If she treats her brother like this, how will she treat me, her ex-boyfriend! Has Phoebe really made up her mind to cut ties with us?

Reece stood at the door, wanting to knock again, but he knew Phoebe: if she didnโ€™t want to do something, no one could force her. So he turned around and went back to their room.

Jamar lay on the bed, pale and clutching his stomach. Seeing Reece come in, he quickly asked, โ€œWhat did Phoebe say?โ€

Reece shook his head. โ€œShe said she wonโ€™t help.โ€

Disappointment spread across Jamarโ€™s face. He took a deep breath. โ€œIโ€™m in this condition, and she can just ignore meโ€ฆโ€

For a moment, he felt truly miserable.

Reece sighed. โ€œI think sheโ€™s serious this time. Sheโ€™s really decided to cut ties with you.โ€

Jamar pressed his lips together. โ€œIs she really that petty over such small matters? We didnโ€™t mistreat her at all.โ€

He was happy that his sister had been found and brought back.

In the past year or so, he and Phoebe had grown closer. She had been quite indulgent with him, and he knew she cared about him.

Tut now, is she really willing to cut off our sibling bond just like that? How does it come to this thought, Jamar?

Seeing Jamarโ€™s disappointment and inability to accept it, Reece felt uneasy too. He couldnโ€™t help but wonder: If I were the one vomiting and needed to go gather medicinal herbs, would Phoebe care?

He had been so sure she wouldnโ€™t abandon him, but now he felt uncertain.

Jamar started feeling sick again and rushed out to vomit. When he returned, Reece suggested, โ€œI can have someone from the crew take you to the village clinic.โ€

At that moment, Sienna walked in with a cup of hot water. โ€œYeah, Jamar, Iโ€™ll take you to the clinic.โ€ She knew Reece had gone to ask Phoebe for help with medicinal herbs. As it would seem, she didnโ€™t want her brother to get better. She didnโ€™t want to stop him outright, but deep down, she didnโ€™t want Phoebe to help. Sure enough, she has become so heartless that she doesnโ€™t care about Jamar anymore. This way, Jamar wonโ€™t have to worry about her anymore, right?

Jamar felt terrible and could only nod in agreement. The crew members quickly came and took him to the village clinic for an IV drip.

Sienna looked at Jamar. โ€œI stay here with you.โ€

Jamar shook his head. โ€œNo need. Youโ€™ve been working all day. Go rest.โ€

Sienna said worriedly, โ€œBut Iโ€™m notโ€ฆโ€

Jamar gave her a reassuring look. โ€œThere are crew members here. Iโ€™ll be fine. You should rest well tonight so you can stream tomorrow.โ€

Sienna didnโ€™t really want to say it. The clinic smelled of cheap disinfectant, and it made her uncomfortable. Plus, she wanted to get a good nightโ€™s sleep after a long day, but she couldnโ€™t just leave outright, so she pretended to agree to stay. She knew Jamar cared for her and didnโ€™t want her to stay.

After Jamar finished speaking, Sienna said reluctantly, โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll head back then. If you need anything, just call me.โ€

Jamar nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

Sienna tucked him in and said, โ€œGoodnight, Jamar.โ€

Jamar forced a smile. โ€œGoodnight, Sienna.โ€

Watching Sienna leave, Jamar couldnโ€™t help but think, โ€˜If we hadnโ€™t had that falling out, would Phoebe have stayed by myโ€ฆ'

As soon as he closed his eyes, memories flooded back. He had a weak stomach and had vomited a few times before. Phoebe had taken time off work to stay by his side and care for him. She would even make medicinal herbs and warm oatmeal for him. She would remind him not to eat cold food and to eat on time. During that time, she would bring him homemade meals at work every day. He had enjoyed the care and attention from Phoebe back then. But sometimes, he would get impatient and wonder why she was so concerned about him. Now, he couldnโ€™t help but miss those days.

Alone in the clinic getting an IV, Jamar felt vulnerable. He also wondered if Sienna really cared about him as a brother. Knowing he had diarrhea after eating an omelette for breakfast, she still served him strong-tasting fish for dinner. Is she really careless, or does she think I wonโ€™t refuse? Jamar shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it anymore. He kept telling himself that Sienna was kind and wouldnโ€™t do it on purpose.
