Chapter 362
Elliot had previously thought his wife was becoming increasingly unreasonable. But he hadn't expected another factor at play.
โIt was all Opheliaโs doing,โ Phoebe stated plainly. โShe was already dissatisfied with me. Thatโs why she fell forโฆโ
Elliot felt awkward, but he knew Phoebe was right. His wife took her reputation very seriously, especially in front of the Jenkins family. Yet, because of their daughter and son, she had repeatedly become a trending topic, embarrassing herself several times. She had even been summoned to the old family home, where his parents had reprimanded her in front of the entire family. So he understood. His wife did harbor some resentment toward Phoebe, but before, it had never been this extreme or irrational. It seemed that without Ophelia stirring things up, Lydia might have calmed down.
Now, Elliot wasnโt sure how to respond. He felt a sharp pang in his heart. Phoebe saw everything so clearly, yet her relationship with her mother was only growing more distant. After everything that had happened, repairing their bond would be harder than ever.
He changed the subject. โPhoebe, is there a way to break the effect?โ
Phoebe shook her head. โItโs caused by a type of fragrance. Thereโs no way to undo it. If she stays away from Ophelia, sheโll gradually get better.โ She added, โOh, and you should have her get checked at the hospital. They should be able to detect an unusual active compound in her system.โ She deliberately mentioned this so that Elliot would take action to stop Lydia from interacting with Ophelia. And if Lydia got checked and realized she had been manipulated, she would confront Ophelia about it herself.
Elliot nodded firmly. โAlright!โ Whether his wife liked it or not, he would make sure she stayed away from Ophelia. That woman was nothing but trouble. Lately, Finnanโs reputation had taken a huge hit because of the Lyons family scandal. Even the Hill Groupโs stock price had plummeted. Elliot had no intention of following in his footsteps.
Chapter 303
When they arrived at the entrance of Oriar, Phoebe refused their offer to escort her inside. She got out of the car with Raylan and left.
After entering the city, Raylan said, โIโll take you back to the hotel.โ
Phoebe raised an eyebrow. โAre you worried that Siennaโs backers will make a move against me here in Oriar?โ
โOr do you just want to make it look like you were really at the hospital tonight breaking Cainโs curse?โ Ophelia didnโt seem like the type to visit Cain willingly, which meant there was only one possibility: someone had sent her there to gather information.
Raylan admired how sharp she was. โBoth, actually.โ The reason he had Phoebe control those two lanterns earlier was to bait the opposition into investigating. Now, they would see that his connection with Phoebe was real, not just an act. Going forward, if they wanted to target Phoebe, they would have to think twice. Before, he hadnโt been entirely sure that his path to freedom would be tied to Phoebe. But after spending time with her, he had a feeling. It was her. There was no mistaking it. So whether it was because he found her personality likable or because of her significance, he didnโt want anything to happen to her.
