Chapter 686 A Motherโ€™s Act

โ€œMmm!โ€ Lily struggled to make sounds, wanting Yunice to stay and explain everything, but it was no use.

After leaving Lilyโ€™s ward, Yunice walked straight out of the hospital. Wyatt asked, โ€œNot going to see Owen?โ€

Yunice glanced at the time and replied over her shoulder, โ€œI have class this afternoon.โ€

โ€œBesides, even if I donโ€™t go to Owen, Lily will. Why should I go looking for trouble?โ€

Everything was of their own making. The consequences of their actions would be theirs alone to bear.

Even if she wanted revenge, Yunice would never personally take action and leave evidence behind.

โ€œMr. Wyatt,โ€ Scarfaceโ€™s voice came through the phone.

Yunice turned her head slightly to listen as Scarface said, โ€œSorry, Mr. Wyatt, I accidentally let that guy get away.โ€

She looked at Wyatt.

Scarface asked, โ€œShould I go after him?โ€

Yunice answered for Wyatt. โ€œNo need.โ€

If the avenger got caught, wouldnโ€™t that just make things easier for Elsie?

Four hours later, the anesthesia finally wore off for Lily, replaced by the unbearable pain of her surgical wound.

But she still forced herself out of bed, stumbling out of the ward and grabbing at anyone she could reach, asking through gritted teeth, โ€œWhereโ€™s Owen? Whereโ€™s Owenโ€ฆโ€

A โ€œkindheartedโ€ person stepped forward. โ€œI know where he is. Hereโ€“sit in this wheelchair, Iโ€™ll take you to him.โ€

Minutes later, Lily appeared at the door of Owenโ€™s hospital room.

Owen had just undergone a liver transplant, his condition even worse than Lilyโ€™s.

He lay flat on the bed, an oxygen tube in his nose, lips so dry they were cracked and bleeding.

Unable to lift his phone, he had it resting by his ear.

โ€œIs my passport ready?โ€ he asked weakly. โ€œI paid for expedited serviceโ€“whatever it costsโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSir, your passport is ready, but thereโ€™s an issue with your motherโ€™s. It might take another dayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo need to wait,โ€ Owen panted. โ€œIโ€™ll leave first. Iโ€™m going today. Get someone to carry me on a stretcher. Once Iโ€™m at the rehab center abroad, Iโ€™ll pay you the balance right awayโ€ฆโ€

Hearing this, Lily froze.

Slowly, she tugged her hospital gown open a little and saw the thick bandages wrapped around her chest:

Her eyes flickered. Yunice had been telling the truth.

Owen really did have cancer. And to save himself, without her consent, he had cut out oneโ€“third of her liver.

That meant she would now become a frequent hospital patient for the rest of her life.

More importantly, after taking her liver to save himself, Owen was going to flee overseas and leave her to die.

Her hands clenched hard on the wheelchair armrests. She wanted to strangle him right there.

How had she raised such a heartless animalโ€“worse than an animal!

โ€ฆNo, Owen couldnโ€™t leave. And he couldnโ€™t die, either.

She couldnโ€™t count on Owen anymore, but if Elsie was alive, she still had hope.

Paul still liked Elsie. As long as Elsie lived, there was a chance for both mother and daughter.

โ€œOwenโ€ฆโ€ Lilyโ€™s voice trembled from the doorway.

Owen startled, the sudden movement tugging at his stitches and making him spasm in pain.

Seeing her there, his expression shifted with complicated emotions.

He hadnโ€™t expected her to wake up so soon, let alone come looking for him.

He didnโ€™t know if she had overheard his phone call, so he stayed silent for a moment.

Lily wheeled herself in, face pale, eyes red, speaking in a weak voice.

โ€œOwen, how are you feeling now? Iโ€™m so relieved my liver could save youโ€ฆโ€

Owenโ€™s eyes narrowed, studying her.

Tears slid down Lilyโ€™s cheeks. โ€œSilly boy, did you think you could hide your illness from me? I only pretended not to know because I was afraid youโ€™d refuse to take my liver and try to endure it alone. Iโ€™d already contacted the doctors to secretly donate to you. As long as you recover, Iโ€™ll have hope to go on living.โ€

Owen said nothing.

Hahโ€“crocodile tears. If she hadnโ€™t overheard his call and feared being abandoned, would she say this?

His mind worked quickly before he slowly reached out his hand, โ€œMom, you really are the one who loves me most. Once I recover and can get out of bed, Iโ€™ll take you abroad to enjoy life.โ€

Lily kept her stiff smile in place, matching his performance with her own.

Neither spoke for a moment. Then Lily wiped her tears and glanced at the empty bed beside him. โ€œWhy donโ€™t we share a room, just the two of us? That way, I can take care of you.โ€
