Chapter 282

Melody called Carly, recounting Hailey's disastrous date and her rain-soaked return. Carly erupted in laughter.

"This is hilarious! So what if she's a Lambert? It's her own fault for being ugly. Melody, you're amazing! Ewan's totally smitten."

Melody smirked. "Relax, Carly. There will be more interesting stories tomorrow."

Carly added, "Serves Hailey right for hanging out with Celine and getting in our way. This will teach her a lesson."

"I'll be waiting for your good news, Melody," Carly said.

"All right, Carly," Melody replied.

Celine returned to the dark dormitory late that night. Assuming Hailey was still out, she was surprised to find Hailey asleep in bed.

Perplexed, Celine said, "Hailey, you're back. Did you have fun with Ewan?"

Hailey, her back to Celine, replied, "I did. I'm tired; I'm going to sleep."

Celine tucked the blanket around Hailey. "All right. Good night." She then went to shower. Hailey, however, lay in bed, silently crying.

When Hailey awoke, Celine was gone. Hailey's eyes were swollen from crying. As she got up to wash, a knock came at the door.

"Coming," Hailey called.

She froze upon opening the door to find Ewan. He had come to the dormitory looking for her. Hailey wondered if he'd apologize, though she wasn't sure she'd forgive him.

"Why are you here?" Hailey asked.

Ewan, his expression grim, demanded, "Why did you send people to beat up Melody?"

Hailey was stunned. "Melody was beaten up?"

"Yes," Ewan said. "They beat her up and warned her not to mess with you again."

Snapping out of her shock, Hailey replied, "I didn't send anyone to beat up Melody."

Ewan refused to believe her. "I can't believe you're so evil! Don't you dare mess with Melody again."

Hailey laughed bitterly. She'd thought Ewan was there to apologize, but he was seeking justice for Melody. Hailey hadn't sent anyone; the only explanation was that Melody had framed her. Instead of believing her, her fiancé sided with Melody.

"Ewan, you never liked me, right?" Hailey finally asked.

Staring at Hailey's birthmark, Ewan said, "Look in the mirror. How could I like a face like that? You're not worth comparing to Melody."

Hailey felt her heart break. Ewan and Melody were the university's most popular students; they seemed perfect for each other. She didn't understand why Ewan had pursued her.

"Ewan, you pursued me first. You said I was pretty—"

Ewan interrupted, his tone disgusted. "Don't be naive, Hailey. Do you think I'd say that if you weren't a Lambert? It's my parents who want me to marry you. I don't like you. Thanks to you, I can't pursue the woman I like. You're just an ugly woman!"
