Ewan quickly caught Melody and pulled her into his arms. Everyone burst into laughter. Celine and Hailey watched from the edge of the crowd. Celine looked worriedly at Hailey. "Hailey, are you alright?"
Hailey raised an eyebrow. "I'm better than alright! Celine, wait here. I'll be a minute."
She then pushed through the crowd to Ewan and Melody. Melody's face paled; she hid behind Ewan, sobbing. "Hailey, please don't hit me anymore."
Ewan protectively stood before Melody, looking at Hailey with displeasure. "Hailey, what do you want?"
Hailey smiled. "Melody, why are you so scared I might hit you? Or are you aware that, as a mistress, you deserve a beating?"
The students gasped and began gossiping. "Why did Hailey say Melody knowingly became a mistress?" "What's Hailey's relationship with Ewan?"
Ewan's expression darkened. "Hailey, are you done stirring up trouble? Leave!"
Hailey stood her ground, laughing coldly. "Afraid, Ewan? Afraid people will find out we're engaged? Afraid they'll find out you're my fiancรฉ?"
She realized her foolishness. Ewan had never publicly acknowledged their relationship. Before Ewan could speak, Hailey interrupted, "Ewan, let's break off the engagement!"
Ewan was taken aback. He hadn't expected this. His parents, close to the Young family, had pressured him to marry Hailey, calling her his future wife. He'd pursued her deliberately, complimenting her appearance and pretending to like her, eventually winning her affection. She was positive and vibrant, always smiling, but Ewan only found her foolish. He was disgusted by her birthmark. He was attracted to Melody's figure. He'd seen Melody on the basketball court and been immediately drawn to her. He never imagined Hailey would break off their engagement. How dare she!
He looked at Hailey, noticing for the first time the brightness in her eyes. "Ewan," she said, "I'm breaking off the engagement. Let's end this!"
Hailey removed her bracelet, a Shaw family heirloom given to her by Ewan's mother, and handed it to him.
Ewan's eyes grew cold. "Hailey, you're the one breaking it off. Don't regret this!"
"I won't," Hailey said firmly.
"Alright. We're done," Ewan said, taking the bracelet.
Hailey walked away. Passing Melody, she loudly declared, "Everyone, watch out for this girl. She steals other people's boyfriends! She loves being a mistress!"
Melody gasped, "You!"
Hailey ignored her and left. The students gossiped, pointing at Ewan and Melody. "Melody was throwing herself at Ewan? She knowingly became his mistress?" "Who knew she was so open-minded? But it's understandable. Look at those curves. What man could resist?"
The final paragraph is very rambling and unclear. I have done my best to edit it to make sense, but some clarifying information may be needed to further improve the passage.
