Chapter 36: Taking You Back to the Sherman Residence

Upon reflection, Miriam felt that it made sense. It was apparent that the young man was clever. So, it wasn’t surprising for him to come up with such a strategy. She chuckled affectionately.

“Chelsea, you’re always so clever. Go on, help me gather all the housekeepers. I need to question each one of them.”

“Alright then…”

Chelsea, in her high heels, summoned all the housekeepers and accompanied Miriam back to the mansion. Before she left, she seemingly glanced in Caleb’s direction. Caleb couldn’t make out her expression, but he had the feeling that she must be quite pleased with herself. The move she played just now was so unexpected that even he was startled by it.

Fortunately, the world wasn’t only inhabited by people who didn’t keep their word. There were some people who, even when dealing with strangers, would keep their promises. Taking advantage of everyone’s departure, Caleb swiftly climbed over the fence. Fortunately, the courtyard was filled with many large trees. Otherwise, there would have been no way for him to conceal himself.

Upon leaving the neighborhood, Caleb suddenly found himself engulfed in confusion. Where should I go? News of the injured buyer would surely reach George’s ears. By then, how can I survive the hunt by both the Quixall family and Miriam?

Boom! Right then, a heavy rain began to pour from the sky. It was raining cats and dogs, and within a matter of minutes, Caleb was completely drenched. He took shelter under the eaves to escape the rain, finding a temporary sanctuary.

No one will be able to find me in such heavy rain. I’ll hide out here for now, and once the rain stops, I’ll figure out a way to escape the pursuit of both families. Leaning against the wall, Caleb closed his eyes. The sound of rain persisted.

“Caleb, have you not found a place to stay?”

“You should head back. If you return late, Mr. Sherman might blame me.”

Gianna closed her umbrella, standing next to Caleb.

“Yesterday, my dad asked me what kind of person I’d like to marry. Do you know what I said, Caleb?”

Caleb had absolutely no interest in this topic. He chose to act as if he hadn’t heard anything. He remained silent, yet Gianna was not annoyed.

“I said, I want to marry a man who is responsible. Ideally, he should have experienced hardships and isn’t sensitive. Apart from a man like that, I don’t want anyone else.”

With a sarcastic smile, Caleb said, “I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong person. I can’t handle hardship, nor can I stop being sensitive. Ms. Sherman, you should go back. I’m just a poor lad who can’t accomplish anything. I’m incapable of giving you a future.”

Gianna said, “There’s something admirable about being poor. These rich kids do nothing but flaunt their parents’ hard-earned fortune. At least the poor kid starts from scratch.”

Knowing he couldn’t out-argue her, Caleb simply chose to remain silent. He was not just a poor boy. By the time the heart transplant compatibility results were out, he might end up being a dead one. As for the matters that Gianna was considering, he might not even have the luxury of doing the same. Marriage seemed too far off. The reality was, without money and power, one would be trampled into the dust by others.

Gianna stood silently for a moment, then suddenly, she opened her umbrella again. Caleb thought she was finally about to leave, but to his surprise, she tossed her umbrella aside and grabbed his hand, pulling him up to run. Caught off guard, he was led outside the confines of the eaves. The rain discriminated against none, falling evenly upon the two of them.

Drenched to the bone, Gianna turned around, a smile on her face.

“Caleb, doesn’t it feel great to be caught in the rain once in a while?”
