Revenge Forged in Prison
Chapter 38: No One Paid Him Any Attention
As he continued to observe, Caleb abruptly noticed something was off. In one photograph, the person in it resembled him. He was so entranced that he didn’t even hear Gianna calling out to him.
She expressed her dissatisfaction. “What are you looking at so seriously?”
Following Caleb’s gaze, she instantly blushed.
“Don’t get the wrong idea. I didn’t secretly take that photo! It was Raquel who used to flaunt you all the time,” she confessed. “She practically sent me your photos every day. I saw this one and thought it was really good, so I… I…”
She couldn’t continue explaining. The more she did, the more embarrassed she felt. After all, the photograph was taken by Raquel, but the person who developed it was her. Not only did she do so, but she also hung it on the wall of her home. Her intentions couldn’t be any clearer.
Gianna stole a glance at Caleb, noticing the thoughtful expression on his face. She asked nervously, “Caleb, you’re not… angry, are you?”
Caleb shook his head. He was certainly not a petty person.
After a moment of silence, he asked, “Was it you who sent me gifts every holiday?”
When he was serving time in prison, there would always be someone who sent him things. Sometimes it was a plate of ravioli; other times it would be a bouquet of flowers. Items like bandaids were not allowed by the prison guards, so they were confiscated. Yet, the sentiments embedded within the gifts were obviously sincere. He had once imagined that the ones who had sent him the gifts were George and Deborah. Looking back, he realized it was nothing more than a fantasy.
How can a family that devalues my life go out of their way to send me gifts? It’s more likely that they were enjoying their family reunion instead of thinking of me.
Gianna’s gaze shifted slightly. Finally, she steeled herself and revealed the truth.
“It was me. I didn’t dare to reveal my name, always asking the prison guard to keep it from you. I didn’t…”
The Quixall family has forgotten about his existence, while an outsider has shown concern for me. How ironic!
Caleb moved his lips, wanting to express his gratitude to Gianna.
However, the panicking Gianna hastily grabbed a change of clothes and dashed toward the second floor. “I’m going to take a shower first. See you in a bit!”
Watching her flee, Caleb could only smile in resignation. Why is she running away? I wasn’t going to laugh at her.
Since he had no change of clothes, Caleb had no choice but to enter the bathroom in his original outfit. After he entered, he realized there was a problem. The bathroom was filled with women’s products, which only served to confuse him. How am I supposed to know what I need among all these items?
Among a row of bottles, Caleb finally managed to find the body wash and shampoo. He hastily finished his bath, his body emanating a pleasant fragrance. Clutching his shirt, he stepped out of the bathroom. His pants couldn’t be taken off, but at the very least, they could be aired out.
In contrast to him, a woman’s bath was a meticulous affair. An hour later, Gianna descended from upstairs. Her hair was already dry, with a few pink items curled on her forehead, their purpose unknown.
Upon seeing Caleb’s appearance, she realized she had forgotten to get him a change of clothes. She smacked her forehead in frustration. “Oh my, I forgot! Caleb, could you wait a moment? I’ll fetch you some clothes.”
Caleb managed to stop her just in time. “Wait. You actually have men’s clothing at home?”
Gianna was taken aback, then stood there awkwardly. In truth, she didn’t. She said softly, “The rain is about to stop. I’ll go out and buy them for you.”
