Revenge Forged in Prison
Chapter 40: A Shattered Dream
At that moment, a ringtone shattered the silence. Gianna pushed herself up and reached for her phone. She realized it was a call from Raquel. Without even guessing, she knew it must be about Caleb. With a blank expression, Gianna added Raquel to her blacklist, looking thoroughly displeased.
After her argument with Raquel, the two of them hadn’t been in touch. As time went by, she gradually forgot about her. It wasn’t until Raquel called just now that she realized she hadn’t yet blocked the former on her phone. I should’ve blocked her a long time ago. At least, it will save me some unhappiness.
Gianna closed her eyes, wanting to take a brief rest. However, less than a few minutes later, her phone received a notification. “Who is it? It’s so annoying.” Once the screen was unlocked, a notification for a new text message popped up.
Upon clicking to view, Gianna was startled by the contents of the message. Her drowsiness disappeared at once.
Raquel: Don’t play dumb, I know Caleb is at your place.
It was undoubtedly sent by Raquel. Gianna steadied her emotions. Raquel must be speculating, as she hasn’t actually seen Caleb with her own eyes. On what grounds is she so certain? Besides, what difference would it make even if she knew? Does she dare to trespass on a private residence with her men?
Gianna blocked this unfamiliar number and spent some time browsing on her phone. Five minutes later, her cell phone chimed again. The message read: You b*tch. To think I considered you a friend. Is this how you repay me? You initially got close to me for Caleb’s sake, didn’t you?
Gianna had just finished reading these few lines when the next message popped up: Blocking me won’t help. I refuse to believe you’ll stay indoors forever. I’m warning you, Caleb has stirred up serious trouble. If you don’t hand him over, brace yourself for the Sherman family’s bankruptcy.
Upon seeing this, Gianna found herself growing somewhat concerned for Caleb. How is he supposed to live his life from now on? The Sherman family can’t protect…
Chapter 40: A Shattered Dream
As soon as she reached the ground floor, her eyes lit up. It’s indeed true that clothes make the man!
Previously, Caleb was dressed in tattered clothes provided by the Quixall family, appearing only marginally better than a vagrant. After changing his clothes, his charisma was instantly taken up a notch. Compared to the past, he had become more composed and had matured significantly. The only constant was his warm and kind heart.
However, it wasn’t the time to discuss these matters. The most pressing matter at hand was to clarify the issue Raquel had spoken of. Gianna urgently asked, “Caleb, I heard some big shot is after you. Is there any truth to this?”
Caleb’s gaze dimmed. “If I say yes, would you hand me over?” He had thought he had finally found someone who genuinely cared for him. Yet, just a few hours later, this beautiful dream was about to shatter. Forget it, I’m already used to it.
Gianna, after all, had been sending him gifts for five years, which was far more than what the Quixall family had done. He wasn’t a selfish individual, so he wouldn’t let his affairs drag others down. Moreover, evildoers like Jesse were few and far between in this world.
Meanwhile, Gianna was on the verge of stomping her foot in frustration. “I would never do that, Caleb! If it weren’t for you saving me back then, I wouldn’t even have the chance to speak with you here. How could I possibly betray you? I’m just worried about you. How are you supposed to live on with such a powerful person hunting you down?”
The sincerity in her words touched Caleb, stirring a subtle emotion within him. Even though he had once saved Gianna, that was a long time ago. There was actually no need for her to treat him this well.
