Chapter 62: Even Death Felt Like Relief

The entire Quixall household sprang into action, launching a frantic search for the so-called stolen goods taken from the Sherman family. The problem was—they had no idea what the missing items actually looked like. Clueless and desperate to please, they rummaged through every room, pulling out anything unfamiliar and piling it up for George to inspect.

In the chaos, a few servants saw an opportunity. Slipping some loose cash into their pockets, they quietly disappeared into the background, planning to sneak it out later unnoticed.

The haphazard search dragged on for over thirty minutes. “Mr. Quixall, this is everything we found,” Agnes said meekly, stepping aside to reveal the collected items.

George swept his gaze across the pile, arms folded behind his back. His frown deepened with every second, irritation simmering beneath the surface. “None of this is what we’re looking for! Is this what you call work?”

What a bunch of useless fools. I’ve wasted money feeding idiots. They even dragged out the old stationery set my friend gave me—what are they thinking?

His voice exploded across the room. “Put everything back! Right now! If we don’t find the item today, you can all start packing your things!”

That statement struck fear into the housekeepers’ hearts. In all their years of service, no matter how angry he had been, George had never threatened to fire them. This time, it was clear—he wasn’t just angry. He was furious.

Sensing the tension, Agnes quickly stepped in, her tone calm and coaxing. “Mr. Quixall, please calm down. I’ll make sure everything is cleaned up properly.”

She waved her hand and barked, “Why are you all just standing there? Put everything back where it belongs—don’t keep Mr. Quixall waiting!”

The housekeepers scrambled to obey. Within ten minutes, the hall was cleared, everything returned to its place. George didn’t even bother inspecting their work. His thoughts were consumed by Phillip’s warning, each word pressing down on him like a mountain. The weight of it all left him overwhelmed—if there were a way to escape the pressure entirely, even death felt like a tempting relief.

Just then, Raquel seized the moment. “Mr. Quixall, these housekeepers wouldn’t dare mess with your personal belongings. There are some private places they didn’t dare touch.”

George glanced at her, wary. “What are you getting at?”

Raquel suggested, “Why don’t you, Yelena, and I split up? If we each search a few rooms, we’re bound to find something.”

After a moment of contemplation, George gave a firm nod. “It’s the only option left. These people are…”

With that, the trio divided the mansion among themselves, each selecting a few rooms to search.

Raquel was assigned the guest room, Agnes’ lounge, and the quarters where the housekeepers typically stayed. Things didn’t go quite as smoothly when she arrived at Agnes’ room.

Standing by the door with her head slightly bowed, Agnes kept her gaze fixed on the tips of her shoes. Her voice was soft, almost hesitant. “Ms. Levinson, I’m not close to Mr. Caleb. I doubt he would’ve hidden anything in my room.”

Raquel lifted a perfectly shaped eyebrow. “There’s always a possibility. And if the missing item is in your room, how would I explain it to Mr. Quixall if I skip over it?”

Agnes let out a light chuckle. “You’re about to be a part of the Quixall family too, aren’t you? Surely Mr. Quixall would be easy enough for you to reassure.”

The subtle flattery made Raquel’s heart flutter with delight. She let out a soft laugh, covering her mouth with one hand. “You have a way with words. But still, we can’t just skip procedure. I’ve never had the chance to really see your room before—it’s a good opportunity to take a proper look today.”

With those words, Raquel brushed past Agnes to step inside. But without missing a beat, Agnes quickly moved to block her path. “Ms. Levinson, I already searched the room thoroughly before you arrived. Surely there’s no need to go through it again, is there?”

Raquel’s expression cooled, her lips tightening. “Are you trying to stop me?”

Agnes immediately softened her tone, a placating smile on her face. “Oh no, not at all. In fact… I actually have a little secret.”
