Chapter 63: Two Birds With One Stone

Agnes spoke with an air of mystery, piquing Raquel’s interest. “What secret?”

Though Agnes had worked for the Quixall family for many years, she had always been diligent and respectful in her duties. There was never an instance of her stepping out of line. Yet, she suddenly mentioned she had a secret, instantly piquing Raquel’s curiosity.

“Miss, I’m a little shy to speak of this. Could you lean in? I’ll whisper it to you.”

Seeing Agnes waving at her, Raquel frowned slightly and moved closer.

Afterward, Agnes whispered something that caused Raquel to burst into peals of laughter. “Agnes, I didn’t expect someone of your age to still have such interests. All right, then. I’ll help you keep your secret. Consider it as repayment for how you’ve shown me respect.”

As Raquel turned to leave, she failed to notice the fleeting complexity in Agnes’ gaze. Once the surroundings had completely quieted down, Agnes closed the door, even locking it. Although she trusted her colleagues wouldn’t casually rummage through her belongings, she decided it was best to double-check everything, just to be on the safe side.

In a daze, Caleb felt a pair of soft hands, evoking a sense of familiarity. He abruptly opened his eyes, and just as he had expected, he saw Raquel looking at him with eyes full of pity. “Cale, I’m sorry for the inconvenience.”

Caleb pulled her hand away. “If you truly feel that I’m being wronged, tell your dear uncle the truth. It might spare me some trouble.”

Raquel’s eyes flickered. “Cale, you know me well. My father has been facing setbacks in his business over the past few years. Without your family’s assistance, our influence in upper-class circles would diminish increasingly. Even my current lifestyle would undergo drastic changes.”

Caleb responded indifferently, “Why should I care? If you hadn’t tried to steal from the Sherman family, we wouldn’t be in this mess right now.”

With a sense of guilt, Raquel lowered her head. “I admit that I was the one who took it. However, I was just momentarily out of my mind. Every time I thought of how close you were with my best friend from the past, I couldn’t control my emotions, so—”

Caleb finished her sentence for her, interjecting, “So, you stole someone’s treasure, then framed me for it, all to make the Sherman family look down on me. You wanted to make it impossible for Gianna to be with me, ultimately leading us to part ways. Is that what you’re saying?” What a clever move, killing two birds with one stone!

Apart from the Sherman family, who would hold grudges against him for this matter, the Quixall family, upon finding out that he was a thief, would also look down on him to their very core, wishing he had never set foot in this world. Once everyone had discarded him, the high-and-mighty daughter of the Levinson family would kindly take him in, treating him like a plaything as she pleased and toying with him all day long.

Caleb thought. How scheming! When they were engaged, he had merely thought of Raquel as a girl with a bit of a temper. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that she could be such a woman of despicable means.

Caleb’s gaze was piercing. Raquel didn’t dare meet his eyes, guiltily looking away. “That’s enough, Cale. In any case, it’s all my fault. After all this, I’ll make it up to you.”

A tear trickled down Raquel’s face. “I’m sorry, Cale…”

Subsequently, the door was closed. Caleb had an inexplicable sense of foreboding. “Raquel, come back! We’re not done talking.” However, only pin-drop silence filled the air. Evidently, Raquel had already left.
