Chapter 67: Heartless Brat
Caleb’s breathing hitched, and his fingers trembled. Why is Gianna’s jewelry here? Who put it here, and when? Was it George, or was it Yelena? Or perhaps Raquel, who had been crying before? It’s too late now. It seems inevitable that I’m going to be the scapegoat for this mess.
Caleb lost his balance, staggering until he leaned against the wall. Just as he had anticipated, the predicament had arrived swiftly. Yelena was already stationed outside the room. As soon as she heard the call, she immediately entered.
After she entered, she cast a glance at the frail Caleb, then proceeded to the bathroom, asking, “Where are Gianna’s belongings?”
The housekeeper, trembling, held out the jewelry. “Here.”
Yelena quickly snatched it up, examining it closely for a moment before confirming, “Neither Mom nor I own any jewelry like this. I’ve also seen Raquel’s jewelry, but none of them are as expensive.”
She shot Caleb a sidelong glance, suppressing her anger. “Where did you all find the jewelry?” I’ve been deceived by Caleb still. He’s the one who stole from the Sherman family, yet he put on an innocent facade before me, attempting to deceive me into feeling sympathy for him. Had I known this, I wouldn’t have bothered to call the doctor for him earlier. Thankfully, Dad is wise enough to see through Caleb’s ruse. He stopped the housekeeper from calling the doctor. Otherwise, I’m afraid I would still be kept in the dark even now.
“Inside the ceiling,” the housekeeper gestured toward the ceiling, indicating that was where they found the jewelry.
Yelena walked over and took a good look around, then a cold smirk surfaced on her face. “Well, well. You thought we wouldn’t find out just because you hid it there, didn’t you?”
She dashed out, tossing the jewelry onto the bed. “If it weren’t for Dad’s concern for you, sending someone to clear your drain, we would never have found these stolen goods. Feeling pretty smug, aren’t you? All those people came to investigate, yet they didn’t find anything.”
Overwhelmed with anger, Yelena grabbed Caleb’s shoulders, shaking him back and forth. “Caleb, do you realize? The Quixall family is on the verge of ruin because of you! All because of you, a man who has been behind bars!”
Caleb’s gaze was steady and unflustered. He calmly watched as Yelena lost her composure. He knew that no matter what he said at this point, no one would believe him. Given the circumstances, it was better to say nothing at all.
“Speak up, will you? Speak up!” Yelena shook Caleb’s body wildly, her demeanor resembling that of a madwoman who had just escaped from a mental institution, instilling fear in anyone who saw her.
After a few moments, Yelena realized that Caleb had no intention of speaking. Frustrated, she pushed him to the ground. “If you love playing mute so much, go ahead and indulge yourself!”
Subsequently, she stormed off, only to run headlong into George.
“Yelena huffed. “Isn’t it obvious? Those pieces of jewelry weren’t mine, Mom’s, or Raquel’s. Who else could it belong to if not Gianna’s?”
After George heard that, his expression instantly turned incredibly gloomy. “Just as I thought! That brat, Caleb, was dead set on shirking his responsibilities. He even tried to pin his own mistakes on Raquel before. I swear I’m going to teach him a lesson!” George hastily moved forward, pulling up Caleb, who had fallen to the ground. He scolded, “You heartless brat, daring to cross me. It seems you’re tired of living!”
George reached out and delivered several slaps, causing blood to trickle from the corner of Caleb’s mouth. Aside from a ringing in his ears, he could hear nothing else.
